As the other guy said. Even the 'horrors' you mentioned would be easy to fix; but is seems like other reviewers are reporting playable guitars and technically needing nothing(major or not easily fixable). Especially with the DLX models claiming special care; before being shipped.
Too much weight (Harder wood, Ash varies), some prefer then might be the only real issue with the DLX models, with their upscale parts that don't really matter much.
But they do stand as a relatively comparative and inexpensive way to have some so called pro setup SHIPPED, already done for you, if that's what you are after. Here they are a boon and oddly not as any bad report would describe.
No one should expect absolute super setup perfection in the highest; but I would agree the DLX should be pretty nicely done. And that is what people usually report. One could always buy one and see.
Overall I'd say give me the lowest price and if so then I will fluff it myself. It's fun to do. That is the slickest deal and does not mean our own labor doesn't count. Nor does that mean zero shipped finishing. I just personally find it easy and fun. After some YouTube videos (Some better than others of course.)
Look; fret smoothing is a matter of degrees and preference, Any brand new and fresh guitar can get fret spout as the wood settles. Even if pro super setup. And even if they had no fret work; at these prices you and a sanding block would win. So it appears even the non DLX models are arriving with *some* basic fine finishing. Even if its not much compared to absolutely perfect to custom standards. And it takes very little effort to get there. I always say go and pay more at a store, who will baby you and your guitar until you like it; but it will cost you dearly. A lot. And again and again.... Else you can always be there when you need you.
You've either super setup a guitar or you haven't. Whether or not any more setup is required. But it's like a joke for a music store tech. You can always find something to tweak. Especially if it's NOT ever been done maximally, on a fresh guitar.
Just about every single person who pays $500, $750, $5000 or whatever on a BRAND NEW shipped guitars are flabbergasted to find it has not been FURTHER super setup tweaked to there playing style. So almost always some setup has been done; even if very minimal. And almost always and at all prices then it seems it's never enough.
Watch a video. Save a bundle. And I remind you; $51 guitars are arriving very playable practically every time. And guess what? They can be perfected from there, every time. Because none of this stuff is new, to do. There are ways, they are easy and on YouTube.
So dead horse, beat to death. Your guitar might "need" tweaking. And we need to practice.
P.S. And if not worth it then why did you say you kept one?
Always return bad quality or anything misrepresented TO KEEP IT RARE. Never reward bad quality. Never buy without research FIRST. YMMV.
And it's kinda like with rape. A very, very bad crime. What's worse is false witness about it. The end result is the pretender accuser rightly gets the very correction; that they would call down on the reprehensible crime. Every single time; eventually. And we do not even have to catch every one, on our own. They will never escape. Sooner or later.

Even VERY expensive guitar with pricey parts then do not make the lowest cost snd yet still quality parts not work, just as well.
Take POT's for example. Oh dear! The old school ones are bigger under there. Well 250 ohms is 250 ohms with self same tolerance, same ranges and even smoother knob action. They are not junk. And they all get dusty and may need a shot of air or better. Not buying "quality upgrades". If they do not play or sound any better then what is the point?
Sure history had some fall apart parts. That's rare now.
I rarely buy anything from Monoprice any more. Their cables went from inexpensive and decent to more expensive unreliable garbage. The last few electronic items were mediocre. There are better places to get ripped off.

How long was "ages" and which cable was unreliable?
Did they not return all of your money? I know time counts and I'd like to see that compensated too; but what did most of the verifiable reviews say before you bought these items?
In the case of the DLX report; does it sound like they already knew exactly what they were buying, or well enough at least? If one wanted name brands on the headstock then why buy without it? But you are correct; it's quality that is the issue.

Bad cables returned included Ethernet and HDMI. Their charging cables are all trash. None have lasted more than a month or two, and not worth the hassle of return.
Seriously, does Monoprice pay you to come in here and argue endlessly with anyone who makes a criticism?
AND I appreciate a good negative report too.
You know I love my high quality MP 15W and a 1x12 V30 cab too. They even credited me a price drop difference (Rather than my returning). They seemed of very high and kind character to me; I must say. I bought the popular amp with my own money. No ties whatsoever.
Plus, I LOVE my $51 eBay Strat (+TUSQ nut) guitar. It's stunning. So I do know. And it might have been more of a risk than MP; but it's grand. I could sell it for a lot more; but never will.
Because I had a perk for the TUSQ costing me 89 cents and not including Ernie Ball 9's bought in packs I have about $52 (or was it $62) bucks into it, total. I've played $5000 strats that are not better and do not sound as sweet. And I enjoy the light weight. And it has the color of this Tele.
ebay 234901874278 and that's not MP. $50.99 SHIPPED!
"eBay Money Back Guarantee covers most transactions on eBay. It means buyers can get their money back if an item didn't arrive, is faulty or damaged, or doesn't match the listing."

I have bought many items from Monoprice and have been pleased with all. I have been straight up impressed with the quality of the guitars and the amp for the money.
