Depends what you're looking for, how much coverage you need, etc. The GUI and configurability of the Unifi system is pretty slick. If If you are willing to wire in a few Access Points (from Unifi of course) the integration is pretty seamless, same with any Unifi network switches. Very simple to see how your whole network is doing, which devices have poor signal, etc. This device had some quirks at the beginning but has been pretty stable (for me) on the newer firmware.
+1. Bought with Intent to dive into it's extensive security features (vlans, etc.) in my new house... and will sooner than later, but setup with unifi's lite switches and 4 ($50 each used off ebay) AP Pros was super-simple for a novice, essentially plug & play.
I now have super-strong Wifi access everywhere, inside and out. Fast and stable for me.
Hows this compare to a pfsense box? I have a HP SFF that i plan on putting pfsense on - but maybe for the right price ill go dream machine.
Already have 2 Unifi APs.
I don't have any experience with pfsense so I can't really comment. If you are already running a unifi controller for your APs then the UDR would take over that role and present you a consolidated view of all your traffic, APs and Router. An outdoor AP is how I got into the unifi world and then got sucked deeper in with the UDR and some mini switches.
Running rock solid for 6 years for me. the only time it hasn't is when i've screwed something up like channel widths that don't play well with certain 2.4ghz devices or firewall rules that I put out of order.
The unit itself acts as an AP correct? So with the 4 ports on the back you can have up to 5 APs?
Yes it has a built in AP. Theoretically you could connect 4 additional APs. Or other unifi switches or other third party switches. I've got an outdoor AP and couple of unifi switches attached to mine.
If I was buying today vs. back in 2018, i'd get this over the USG but the USG isn't a slouch either. It's just not going to be as feature rich as this one.
But personally, i'd spring for the UDM Pro if I had to make a choice.

Unifi works.
Until it doesn't.
Their FW is a mess.
Agreed 100%. I'm not a power user but wanted a router that was more stable than big box store products from Netgear, Asus, etc. and one that could truly handle QoS at higher throughputs. So I ended up getting the original generation Dream Machine about two years ago and I think it's just... fine.
There are definitely hiccups with my OG Dream Machine depending on the firmware and software revisions. Not necessarily performance hiccups but certain random small features would work or stop working. For any Redditors looking at this, I recommend taking a cursory look at the Ubiquiti subreddit where you'll find A LOT of these anecdotes. It's to the point where I just ignore any new updates unless they're deemed critical for security.
I also find the "analytics" that they introduced in one of the later updates to be kinda potato. It looks fancy with a bunch of dashes and widgets until you actually go to use it. That's when you realize the UI was definitely made by someone knowledgeable about software/network engineering but not so much around UX. The data collected is NOT as powerful or deep as one would hope from a prosumer-level product made by a company who specializes in enterprise equipment.
The 1Gbps WAN port IS a bummer especially now that 1 Gig+ ISP packages are becoming a bit more commonplace. Not sure what Ubiquiti was thinking here with not upgrading the port; it was likely a business decision made during the extreme parts shortage era and was also likely intended to help keep the cost down. Ultimately the wrong design decision considering the crowd they're targeting, IMO.
Also FWIW with my OG Dream Machine, either the LAN stops working, or the WiFi stops working, or both stop working. Yes -- my Fiber connection still works when I connect directly in any of these scenarios. Rebooting the OG Dream Machine doesn't fix it but it somehow magically resolves itself after 20 mins or so. I can still access the configuration page so I think it may be a weird bug or there's some negotiation handshake breakdown between my Fiber ONT to the OG Dream Machine.

Probably the max rate with deep packet inspection, intrusion prevention, and filtering enabled.
No, it's 700Mbps Max with those disabled. About half of that with all of it enabled
The udr is overpriced junk. I had one and it would crash my entire unifi network whenever my desktop got to max speeds. The unifi console would also crash when you got Max speeds because of the incredibly weak cpu
At 200 bucks, it's a joke that it can't handle 1gbps. luckily I had got mine during early access at $79. but even at that price with how junk it was, not worth it
I sold all my unifi stuff and just got the deco wi-fi 6e 3 pack at Costco and my network is stable

Kinda crazy they would have released it this way with how prevalent gig Internet is becoming.
