Those 2 outlets are split from 1 wire. There's no point in applying that into 2 seperate halves or joining it back together. Especially if you're adding some form of surge protection since you only want to do that once.

This may be trash, but it's no worse than what's in the wall now.
Pretty innovative design, has most of the bells and whistles.
The 'stability rod' is a really intriguing idea, it made me think of an issue that needs solving.
My dad's old house has really old, really overused plugs that the sockets are so 'stretched' hardly anything will stay plugged in.
They should come up with something even better than a stability rod.
maybe 'extra thick prongs'?

A surge protector needs a varistor, which is a cheap component. Why does surge protection need to be expensive?

I would say your dad is better to come up with some replacement outlets...

I would agree that it's probably better to just replace the outlets but I did think that some units you can actually use the center screw after you plug it in to keep it stable

edit: something like this

GE 6-Outlet Extender, 2 Pack, Grounded Wall Tap, Adapter Spaced Outlets, 3-Prong, Quick and Easy Install, UL Listed, White, 40222 https://a.co/d/8CuOIUa

Someone already beat me to it, but the solution to your problem is replacing that outlet with a new one. It's cheap and fairly easy.

I find it strange that it only taps into one outlet but intentionally covers two - why not utilize both?
