I think in the medium term this is problem for all standards now. In several years I bet the 12mm thru axle will be undesirable because now everyone is using 15mm for (insert marketing reasons here) and there will be limited options for replacement.

You're definitely right that qr has been phased out (for marginal gains for most), just lamenting the days of simple universal standards.
I've ridden mountain/ road bikes for years and have never had a problem with a qr going bad, being and weak point or causing any problem.

There is no doubt that the through bolt design is stronger, but I doubt that most riders have ever had a problem with qr.
Salsa, and not even close really. Its better all the way down the spec sheet.

With a 30t chainring a 46t cassette is fine. I'm running a 1x11 with 46t and rarely find myself reaching for another gear even on the tough climbs.

Is this better value than Schwinn Axum+$300 in upgrades? I got the Axum for $200 and contemplating to build vs buy. Forks and BB, Brakes need a major upgrade is what I see at Axum

$200 sounds like a great deal on the Axum. That said, upgrading the Axum to the level of this Rangefinder would likely be more than $300 bucks. You would be replacing everything but the frame.

I'm really surprised they are still using a QR rear on the Rangefinder. Otherwise good deal.

The bigger problem is there are limited options if you ever need to replace the rear wheel. I believe there are adapters, but probably not easy to find an off-the-shelf replacement. That said, there is no real need to upgrade the wheels, and if you are riding it hard enough to damage it, you are probably ready for to upgrade the whole bike.

Good started for a bike? My wife just got a Walmart trail bike and I've been wanting something to get into it too. I don't mind spending a little if it's a good bike
