Gelatin is a protein derived from collagen, a material found in the bones, cartilage, and skin of animals.
Some people don't want animal in their vitamins.

Also for those who are Muslim. The gelatin has a good chance of being from pig, so many of my more devout Muslim friends avoid gelatin altogether

Vitamin capsules are usually made with animal-source gelatin, so it's non-vegetarian, vegan, and possibly no-go for various religious restrictions.
