8700k here... Same boat. If this was a DDR5 combo I think I would finally bite.

14th gen is around the corner but it's only a 3% bump across the board from 13th gen. The 147K got a +4 e-core bump to a total of 12.

E: Let's wait for benchmarks. Surely, there will be plenty of sales this coming Holidays.

You would want 13th gen or go AM5 , IMO.

The 12700 is still a good chip at about 80%(tied with 7600) of the 7800X3D.

If you want a cheap and efficient gaming(MT peformance like 5800X/12600K)rig look at the 7500F. From Hardware Unboxed, it beats the 13400 with a CPU bottleneck at 1080p with the 4090 and should beat or tie with the 12700K.

And here I sit asking the age old question "Should I upgrade by current processor (9700K) that does everything I need, with a shiny new processor that will have a bunch of overhead"

Although that's also a hell of a jump in single thread performance...

I been thinking of doing the same because my mb is PCIE 3 and I have a PCIE 4 videocard, but the difference is 5% in performance so I decided not to.

Bought the 12700K (not KF variant) for $350 last october and then it pained me to see the 13th gen come out soon after. Now I see $350 for these crazy bundles --- !

Same here, but I don't think it was predictable that this would happen. I watched all of the releases from coffee lake 8th gen til now and these sales are unprecedented for intel.

Still rocking a 6700k lol..

From my understanding 12th gen intel is super inefficient anyways an heats up like crazy.

If it's a gen to skip, it would be these 12 ones lol. I'd wait another gen if you only want to upgrade. Then decide on 13th/14th.

I upgraded to a 12900k from a 4790k last month. But with ddr5 and an asus STRIX board. Do you care about building a machine to last you 10 years? That's what I do every 10 years.

Last time I bought an ASRock MB from Newegg it failed in 3 months and nuked my 1070 video card, and about the same time a bunch of other users were asking about the vid card no longer working.

Screw ASRock and Newegg.

8th and 9th series about 5-6y, and 7-8 is the usual turnover. Could also see lower latency ddr5 in about 2 years' time. 14th gen is a hard pass based on performance jump alone. They may have to give it away for free if what I hear about next gen 1700 motherboards being about $500.. like SHITTY AMD AM5 BOARDS ARE NOW
