1) inkjet or laser, they all ship with introductory cartridges. They are not full.
2) When comparing the cost of replacement cartridges look at the cost per page (yield). The laser toners almost always print WAY more pages than inkjet tanks.
Powdered laser toner doesn't dry up and clog nozzles, so the printer doesn't have to keep clearing them and wasting ink when you don't use it. You can turn off a laser printer for months, then turn it on and use it, without cleaning nozzles or replacing ink cartridges.
Good luck!

You might try refilling the cartridges [amazon.com] but that only works for 2~3 times before the printer catches on...and renders the cartridges obsolete !!

However, the official replacement ink carts are too expensive... almost the cost of the printer and not something you will want to purchase. 95% of the replacement toner carts that are off market are from the same company... and they leak inside the printer, ruining the print head and getting toner dots and streaks on every print. Then, the companies will send you emails requesting your remove your negative amazon comment and offer at $20 gift card to do so.
I'm currently using off-market toner carts that seem to not be leaking... but man - the carts are VERY LOUD when you print... but for $80 a set... that is a far cry cheaper than the official carts at $200.
TLDR: Great printer... expensive toner carts when replacement is needed.

Yes - there are replacment toner carts available...
NO - a chip is not present on these carts so the printer has no idea.
Even for Inkjet printers, there are refillable kits available from places like PrecisionInk that allow you to not only refill Canon Carts, but use a chip resetter so the printer will acknowledge and print perfectly like official carts. I've been using these for years on my Canon Photo printers... Look it up... and learn.
I can't say for the printing quality as the hassle of using the printers via wifi kills all the good things about it, if any.
