Assuming you were talking about amazfit bip. Then it has a battery life of 45 days vs this apple watch only 18 hours. To me, less than a day is not useable.

band with a bunch of holes and then a watch face with the Nike logo and that is it.

Sure!

Basically for 10+ years the only way to set up an Apple Watch was to tether it to your phone. Same number, same account, etc (even if you had cellular service on the watch, which is $30+ activation and $10/mo on the major networks; cheaper on the discounters, usually $5/mo)

Then around 2021 Apple introduced "family setup" for watches, which allows you to use your own phone to set up and manage a watch for a standalone user (typically cellular). This was aimed at older adults or children.

However, only a handful of carriers — the usual suspects — support family setup, so you're limited on who you use for that new phone number. We just chose Truphone because they were the only Apple-approved carrier that didn't leave us tied to a major service and charged zero setup fee, just the $10/mo unlimited service.

Eventually we might switch over but it's only been a couple weeks' trial run and we love it. Not perfect, but the cellular watch alone is very capable of basic functions — voice texting, Find My location (sometimes very slow), workout tracking (but can't archive it without a phone).

Not perfect, but he can't easily lose something strapped to his wrist and $130 is a much easier replacement than $500+. And he can't browse websites or get too distracted by it. We also imported selected contacts from our phones. No incoming or outgoing calls or texts are allowed from random people.

It sounds complicated because it's hard to find people in that exact situation and there's probably not much profit in it . HTH

You are missing things like forgetting your charger while traveling. Or an unexpected night out after a long day at work.
Eh, those scenarios seem like edge cases due to lack of user planning. It doesn't make financial sense for Apple to double their battery life to offset users "forgetting their charger" or "pulling all nighters". With its insane laundry list of functions, having a full day's amount of battery is more than reasonable for this device

How is this watch for children who are too young to have their own phone? 8-12 year Olds. Does it function well stand alone i.e. without a phone?

The GPS on this watch couldn't be any worse. I try and see where my kid is at and it will say it hasn't updated in 9hrs! Then if it actually does, it will say he's within a radius that is equal to the city we live in. It's a piece of garbage if you plan to use any cellular function outside of calls.

Tempting..but I have a Samsung s22. Heard I need an iPhone to use Apple watch. This would have been perfect not to carry a phone all the time.

See my comment above…it can work, but you need to make sure the situation works for you

This + Training Today app = 8/10 of a Whoop (or more) for a fraction of the price. I've really enjoyed my setup.
Have the watch. Going to look into the app. Thanks!

Just got my son (13) one of these and couldn't be happier. My wife and I have had watches for years, but using Truphone service, he has a standalone, full function watch that does texting and calling for $10/mo. The setup and management takes place via a parent phone, but it's not tethered — he has his own number, but not the burden of an expensive phone.
Can you explain more about this service? I want to get some thing to my son which he can use to contact us in emergencies and I am trying to avoid handing a smartphone to 11yr old kid.

Yes, i second this. We've done the same for our son for the past year already via T-mobile $10 monthly. Spotify has no native app though for Apple watch, Amazon music does.

I believe the Apple family set up only works with Apple watch SE or series 4 and above.

Honest question, why would you need more than 18hrs on a single charge? I don't think anyone realistically wears these things to bed, just be normal and charge on your nightstand when you go to sleep every night. I have never once felt like these things are running out of battery prematurely
I wear my fitbit 24/7. Just charge it while taking a shower. Just went on a 5 day work trip w/o my charger and still had 30% left.

I now wear my watch 24/7 after a long period of not wearing a watch at all as I could always see what time it was from my phone or computer. Now going on my third Amazfit model (from Bip to Verge and now GTS 2e). I like wearing them at night in order to get a general indication of the quality of my night's sleep. Don't know how anyone could stand the inconvenience of having to charge one's watch daily. All of these Amazfit models go from three to four weeks before needing a recharge. Plus by being patient and watching the sales, don't think I have paid over $50 for any of these watches.

That being said, I am taking a flyer and going to try out an unknown brand only because it has the ability to make and receive calls from one's cell phone. I don't have high expectations for this watch, but for $17 I'm not risking too much (after a $20 coupon and code 4N58S48P -- which may or may not still work today)
