Assuming you were talking about amazfit bip. Then it has a battery life of 45 days vs this apple watch only 18 hours. To me, less than a day is not useable.

Sure!

Basically for 10+ years the only way to set up an Apple Watch was to tether it to your phone. Same number, same account, etc (even if you had cellular service on the watch, which is $30+ activation and $10/mo on the major networks; cheaper on the discounters, usually $5/mo)

Then around 2021 Apple introduced "family setup" for watches, which allows you to use your own phone to set up and manage a watch for a standalone user (typically cellular). This was aimed at older adults or children.

However, only a handful of carriers — the usual suspects — support family setup, so you're limited on who you use for that new phone number. We just chose Truphone because they were the only Apple-approved carrier that didn't leave us tied to a major service and charged zero setup fee, just the $10/mo unlimited service.

Eventually we might switch over but it's only been a couple weeks' trial run and we love it. Not perfect, but the cellular watch alone is very capable of basic functions — voice texting, Find My location (sometimes very slow), workout tracking (but can't archive it without a phone).

Not perfect, but he can't easily lose something strapped to his wrist and $130 is a much easier replacement than $500+. And he can't browse websites or get too distracted by it. We also imported selected contacts from our phones. No incoming or outgoing calls or texts are allowed from random people.

It sounds complicated because it's hard to find people in that exact situation and there's probably not much profit in it . HTH

How is this watch for children who are too young to have their own phone? 8-12 year Olds. Does it function well stand alone i.e. without a phone?
I've placed this device on my 6-year-old to track their location while they're at school. We've enabled school mode to prevent distractions, although she hasn't figured out how to disable it yet. I prefer her being a bit bored and annoyed that she can't use the watch rather than her unlocking and fiddling with it during school hours. Additionally, it's beneficial as it appears to update the AirTags I've attached to her backpack and lunchbox.

The activation process for Truphone was instant, and it functions very effectively. It's an excellent deal, costing less than $10 when prepaid for the entire year.

How did you get the coupon to reduce it down to $17?
For that price it's pretty much a no brainer.

Link is not working.
Try this one:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...=UTF8&th=1

For some reason the previous link contained something which didn't agree with the SD system.

The thing that I am wondering about is the magnetic belt of the watch, other than that the price is good.

Bought it Aug 31 but I won't be getting it till Sept 8 (Friday being my usual Amazon bundled delivery day). 4N58S48P code came from another deal site and is supposed to expire 9/3. So I couldn't guarantee that the code would still work. But the $20 coupon still seems to be on the Amazon site.

However note that if you only can use the $20 coupon on the Akumaka watch, this would result in a net price of $30. For $30 there seem to be several other Asian smart watches brands -- all with similar features and all with favorable reviews (they probably all use the same watch chip). So if you're not in a hurry, wait till one of the other unknown brands comes up with another deal which will probably result in a price around $20. It won't have the prestige and finesse of an Apple watch, but the extra $100+ will mean that you can purchase more SD's. Applause

It also comes with a regular watch band in the box.

Incidentally if you haven't noticed, a similar magnetic watch band for an Apple watch runs around $15. For non-Apple watches they run from $6-10. I have always purchased a magnetic watch band for my Amazfit Bip and GTS 2e, and prefer them as they are easier to put on and off. However when involved in a sport activity, I switch to their standard watch band as it is more secure. It's nice that the Akumaka come with both. But perhaps that is why it has a list price of $50.

I tried to get my heart rate, but seems it is not able to work three times in a roll. which is in my apple watch 7 and it does not seem to be an issue. ( I gave my 7 to my dad)

Honest question, why would you need more than 18hrs on a single charge? I don't think anyone realistically wears these things to bed, just be normal and charge on your nightstand when you go to sleep every night. I have never once felt like these things are running out of battery prematurely
Sleep tracking, and haptic/vibrate alarms. I'm on call so it's nice to have something else wake me up (my phone sometimes doesn't). I will say the fast charging on Series 7/8 is a huge convenience as it's much quicker to charge.

Can it also do fitness tracking on family share? My kid always wants to know how many steps we walk on hikes etc.

As far as I can tell so far, your workout stats (on a standalone watch) are gone as soon as you click the "Done" button because there's no real Fitness app to archive them.

If anyone has a workaround I'd love to know. Apple is simultaneously the simplest and most complex ecosystem I've ever triedWink

I now wear my watch 24/7 after a long period of not wearing a watch at all as I could always see what time it was from my phone or computer. Now going on my third Amazfit model (from Bip to Verge and now GTS 2e). I like wearing them at night in order to get a general indication of the quality of my night's sleep. Don't know how anyone could stand the inconvenience of having to charge one's watch daily. All of these Amazfit models go from three to four weeks before needing a recharge. Plus by being patient and watching the sales, don't think I have paid over $50 for any of these watches.

That being said, I am taking a flyer and going to try out an unknown brand only because it has the ability to make and receive calls from one's cell phone. I don't have high expectations for this watch, but for $17 I'm not risking too much (after a $20 coupon and code 4N58S48P -- which may or may not still work today)
