Is the 7800XT a better buy?
It is at this price. You get av1 encoding and it should be an upgrade. It would be a hard sell plus PR disaster to have a 7800xt be slower than the 6800xt. I would just get the 7800xt.

Yeah, you would think. I am waiting for the GN benchmark results later in the week to determine if I am returning my unopened Merc 6800XT to Amazon for the 7800XT.
Leak claiming a small win for the 7800 XT over the 6800 XT. It's close enough that it should have some weird cases where it loses due to architectural changes between RDNA2 (monolithic) and RDNA3 (chiplets in Navi 32). RDNA3-related features might make it a better pick in the long run, like if it has much better compute/AI performance and AMD works on better support so it can actually be used for such.

It'll still beat a 7700xt so it's in a weird spot right now.
Correct but 3 years old now. The pricing is still floating well above the price points it should be. You would normally clear out inventory as new stock refreshes. But they are refusing to do that.
Its amazing how the companies wont lower the price of these graphics cards. I waited forever for this thing to come down to about $450 and gave up and bought a used 3070Ti about a year ago for $380 out the door. I'm glad Im not still sitting there waiting.

About the same boat for me. Recently grabbed a used 6800 sapphire pulse for $285. Sad part is, the price for new shouldn't be as far off as it is. But nothing bothers me about it being used.
