I briefly owned and returned one of these. They are reasonable $200 bikes. They are not $1300 by any stretch of the imagination. Straight up low end big box store quality with a few shimano parts thrown on to hide the fact they are made by huffy.
I'd agree that its not a $1300 bike. Like I said its more of a $700 bike which you are getting for $230.I don't think anyone believes the retail price. The only thing you can claim is huffy about it is the frame and as long as the frame is lightweight and sturdy, it should be fine. Entry level bike store frames are no different. On any bike, the rest of the components can be adjusted, and in this case those components are good quality brand name. The drivetrain by itself is $300 worth of parts, saddle is $40, front fork is $120. Tires are $40-50 each. Those WTB rims aren't cheap either. Heck, you can just buy it as parts donor bike if you are building your own just for the drivetrain components.

You can upgrade a few components on this bike that you don't like and still come out way ahead. The problem with any of these disassembled direct ship bikes (giordano, kent, Royce Union, almost every bike on Amazon, etc) is that you don't have an experienced bike tech putting it together and fixing all the quality control issues and getting the adjustments right before it hits the floor like at a bike store and you don't have bike store service. The best quality components in the world will seem like crap if they aren't being adjusted correctly and sufficiently. It's on the end user to get everything done up right on these or to hire someone to do it. The parts, however, are there to make a very nice bike for the price.
Ok, just got the bike today and put it together. I am about to give some real world feedback on what I received. Not a shill but not a thread crapper, either. I'll give pros and cons and some observations as well.

A little background. I bought this bike for my 16 year old daughter that outgrew her old bike. I didn't tell her Royce Union is basically Huffy. Shhhh!) She is now 5'3" so I ordered the size small through the Huffy student discount program. For whatever reason, they did not charge me tax so I got the bike to my door for $202.

Surprisingly, the silverback gorillas that FedEx hires for home delivery managed not to mangle the box. Upon taking it out, I noticed a very nice flawless paint job and the color is very attractive. The frame seems quality and no immediate damage like some other unfortunate SD'ers have seen. All parts were present, nothing missing. The English instructions are very generic and not specific to this particular model. Luckily, I am mechanically inclined and have set up bikes before, especially with the plethora of YouTube tutorials that one has at their disposal these days.

Putting the bike together, I noticed a few things:

1. Received Deore XT rear derailleur and Alivio front derailleur just like everyone else. Nice to see Royce Union upgrading instead of downgrading like so many people complained about on the Canyon bike thread a while back. I plan on converting this bike to a 1x drivetrain anyway. It will see trails but we live in Florida so the loss of gearing won't really be an issue here. YMMV.

2. The only damage I saw was a little paint rubbed off a front wheel spoke from where they jammed it into the cranks for shipping, the rear derailleur had a very small scrape on the edge of the pulley cage, and the seat post clamp had some paint rubbed off. Certainly not a deal breaker but I've had other bikes packed with a little more care and packaging.

3. I didn't weigh the bike but it's probably about 30-32 lbs. No heavier than any other hardtail for less than $1000. The steel coil Suntour fork is heavy, as expected.

4. The seat is a WTB Volt. It's a quality seat but it is tiny and not well padded. My daughter is petite and even she said the seat is not comfy. Nothing a cheap seat swap can't handle.

5. The WTB wheels, Neco crank, Kenda tires, and Suntour fork are perfectly acceptable, especially for this price range. I know a lot of people got hung up over the $1299 MSRP. Let it go. These parts are certainly at least on par with other bikes costing $500-$750. They're fine.

6. Where I did notice some cost cutting is in the pedals, seat clamp, steering stem, grips and handlebar. Cheap Huffy level stuff. The pedals gave me flashbacks to the 80s with skinned shins/exposed bone (good times!) The good news is that replacement pedals, seat clamps, steering stems, grips and handlebars are cheaply upgradeable, especially considering I paid $200 OTD for this bike.

7. The disc brakes have some rub. I notice other people complain about that. I'm not a bike mechanic but I've had enough bikes to know that every one I have received needed the brakes adjusted. Plenty of YouTube videos on how to do it. Otherwise, with the money you saved take it to your LBS an they'd be happy to adjust for you.

8. The shifters seem fine right out the box. Still, I'm a tinkerer so I will mess with the hi and lo limits. The brakes are generic but they seem on par with what you would get with the Shimano equivalents on a $750 bike so I'm not complaining. Nice feel and stiff levers.

9. This bike is huge! The size small was listed as suitable for people as short as 5'0". That is a stretch, literally. The tube does measure 15" but this is where I think the difference is. My wife is a similar height to my daughter and she has a Haro Beasly in size small, same 15 inch frame. However, that bike is a 27.5 whereas this one is a 29er. The wheels definitely make a difference. I adjusted the seat height to where my daughter has a slight bend in her knee when the crank is at the downmost position and she is tippy-toeing the bike with shoes on. Hell, I'm 5'10" and I could ride the bike comfortably as it stands. This is where I think Huffy/Royce Union really did a disservice to their customers is the lack of appropriate geometry information/sizing of bikes. I can really see many people unsure of what size to get and wind up with the wrong size bike.

10. The last point ties into this one. In order to cut costs, this bike comes with the same size stem and handlebars no matter what size frame you order. I immediately noticed that the stem is way too long and the width of the bars would be suitable for someone 6 feet tall. Other bike manufacturers take frame size into consideration and shorten the stem and bars as needed. Having said that, enthusiasts often swap out stems and bars to accommodate their body size/riding style so it isn't something that is uncommon. However, if you're a casual rider and want something to ride around the neighborhood with set aside some money and get a shorter stem. I've already ordered a 50mm stem from Amazon and I plan on taking a pipe cutter to the bars to shorten them for her.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to include as much detail as I could for others still waiting on their bikes as well as setting expectations.

TL;DR:

1. The bike has a few warts but overall extremely pleased with the quality, esp. for price paid.
2. Sizing/geometry is something Royce Union could do a much better job with.
3. Cheap parts are inexpensively replaceable.
4. Spend a little more and size the bike to your body/riding habits.
5. Enjoy your high end Huffy!

Did you really own this? You have no idea what Shimano SLX is and the cost of it. Look it up. If you think Shimano SLX is low end big box, you are crazy. You make it sound like it is Shimano Tourney with that "throw in a couple shimano" comment. Not that there is anything wrong with tourney. Specialized and Trek also use tourney. Lets not forget that this bike has a suntour xct fork and HYDRAULIC disc brakes.

Look at the components and not just the name on the frame and judge.

Small (5'-5'6")- available
Small/Medium (5'7-5'10) <-- doesn't exist
Medium (5'11-6'1")- available
Medium/Large (6'2"-6'3)- available
Large (6'4"-6'6")- available

Come on Royce Union. I am interested. I like the style and color, specs and the price. I am 5'8" and I am agile so I have no issue reaching for a medium size. More aggressive stance. However I do enjoy an upright position and do enjoy nimble and whippy ride. I have an old 26er 3x8 marlin and it has a nice nimble whippy feel. Short handle bars gives it that feel too. Feels very different than my 1x10 deore 29er Marin mountain bike with the lower aggressive stance. At 5'8", I am leaning to going down size. Besides doing mountain bike trails, I think the upright position will be more comfortable when riding on the roads. Sheesh. Royce Union couldn't make a S/M size.

The Pros and Cons of Sizing Up or Sizing Down Your Mountain Bike Frame
https://www.singletracks.com/mtb-...ike-frame/

* Weird that the OP disagrees with the sizing. I agree with it. I am 5'8" and 17" seat tube length is my usual correct size. I am usually a medium. My Marin 29er and old Marlin have 17" frame. Their medium is at 17.5" frame or seat tube length. They don't have my correct size. In comparison with my 2021 Marin mountain bike, a 15" frame with Marin (27.5" wheel) says 5'2"-5'5" recommended height. 3" too tall from Marin 15" frame and 3" too short from 3" too tall from royce union recommended height. I am more interested in the small after reading in the Amazon reviews a 5'7" rider and a 5'8" rider getting the small and being happy with it. Very interesting. The 5'8 rider raised his seat so high with the small bike. It looks odd in the picture. He also swapped the stem. Couple people swapped the long stem for shorter stem. If I ordered the medium, I would do that.

I just finished a 4 month return process where they completely ignored me for three of those months. Like I said, they take a walmart bike and throw on Shimano componants to make people think the bikes are high end. Then they put on a ridiculous retail price that their own site has NEVER charged. If you are in the market for a $200 bike this is a reasonable offer. If you think you are getting a $1300 bike you are being scammed. I don't have a dog in the fight anymore since the refunded my money, but this is 100% a Huffy bicycle.

This'll be my first real mountain bike. I moved to an area with much rougher roads and dirt roads and I've been wanting to try mountain biking more anyway. Hard to beat for $240, people on amazon were saying this is a solid deal at $500ish

You really need to look up Shimano SLX because you don't know what it is and how much it costs. A SLX derailleur costs like $80 alone. Do the math and add up the components on this bike. I don't believe you ever had this bike. If you hate huffy so much and have that mentality about the royce union being huffy junk, you would have never bought it from day 1. Huffy has never put out a spec bike like this at your local Walmart store. Too high of spec for walmart customers.

Retail price? Nobody is buying this bike at $1300 so why bring that up? Is a Trek Marlin 5 with a lesser Shimano Altus drivetrain and the same suntour xct worth $740 retail? No. Nobody is buying a Royce Union for $231 and is expecting a $1,300 Trek. Absurd. Some people think one needs to buy Trek or Specialized and automatically think every other bike brand is junk. It is to justify them for paying big bucks.

Imagine riding a Specialized mountain bike that the person spent +$600 and then get smoked by a person on the mountain bike trail who is riding a $231 royce union that has shimano slx drivetrain or a $200 walmart schwinn axum. That hurts! Ha

Kent has its upper brand Giordano brand putting out some sweet road bike and hybrid deals.

Huffy has its upper brand Royce Union putting out this sweet mountain bike deal. You won't find a better spec price nowhere near this sale price. If this was in my right size 5'8" height, I would definitely get it. I am still considering to get it whether I go down a size or up a size. Just not sure which I prefer.

I am looking at these specs with these various giordano/royce union deals and it is quite impressive to see so much bang for the buck.

I am tempted to get one of these giordano/royce union bikes. Not sure which bike style I prefer the most.

I got a Royce Union bike, and after putting it together it's had all sorts of annoying issues. The wheel wasn't centered in the fork because the nuts supplied for left and right are different sizes. The gear shifting is rough and the lower gear rattles and sounds like scraping metal. The disc brakes have been a constant source of problems, loud, squealing when used, and always needing adjustments or they constantly rub against the pad. The seat seems to pivot no matter how hard I tighten it. The whole thing is aggravating, and I've already put hours into taking it apart and setting it back up and googling how to fix these things…. I hate riding it.

Exactly. I do think the bike technicians from a specific bike brand like giordano or royce union will do a better job of putting the bikes together. He is constantly building those specific brand bikes and he has the legitimate tools. I think the walmart employee has less training, less quality tools and he is building like +100 all sort of brand bikes.

A walmart employee can incorrectly put together a Huffy bike or Kent bike at walmart. I don't believe a walmart employee is building the royce union bike or giordano bike.

People can also look on youtube tutorial and fix simple issues in little time. No reason to demand a return and refund when a simple turn on a screw derailleur can fix an issue.

What royce union bike do you have? What disc brakes (mechanical or hydraulic)? Squealing brake when used is a sign of pads that have been tainted. You probably got oil on the pad. Once it is on, the pad needs to be replaced. I never used these spark hydraulic disc brakes.

Shimano shifting never failed me. These are SLX! You need to watch youtube videos that will teach you how to setup your derailleursif you can't set up your derailleurs correctly.

I'm buying one just for the drivetrain. Getting a small for my wife. If she doesn't like it, I'll save it for my 8yr old when he gets bigger. Solid deal imo.

This is a slick deal. As others have mentioned, SLX is a much better groupset than the low end shimano stuff you see in the big box stores. The fork could be replaced with something better. You're not going to want to take this on any serious trails but this bike is likely as much as most people need and at a great price.
