The forthcoming TV OS 17 supports VPN [9to5mac.com] and Apple will start allowing VPN apps on its release. I don't know what VPN services will support it, but VPN will be less of a differentiator going forward.

Probably because the 128GB model with ethernet was just on sale for the same price via Costco or a price match to them.

So i've had multiple rokus over the years, 4k firesticks, and pretty much every version of apple tv. 100% apple tv is the best out of them all. The firesticks are too laggy same for the older rokus. The newer ones can be snappyish but nothing beats the apple tv for responsavieness. That said its also like double the price if not more of all of those (when not on sale) so it makes sense its better lol.

I've never ran into an app that didn't work flawlessly. Also works great with my sound bar and on every tv (I have multiple in my house) I 100% recommend these over any other "smart" tv device.

Note it will have less apps than roku/android app stores since it uses the apple app store. Means less apps but more stability.

One thing about Thread is that it may become super needed and then you may find yourself missing out...but a Homepod mini also does that.
One day but the industry hasn't found any compelling messages to state why and how Thread is needed now. They barely even update their devices to support it. None of my Google Home products have received the updates for Thread support yet. It's all a joke.

When that day comes when it's needed and I need to replace all my devices I'm just going to switch to Home Assistant and run things locally.

The Apple ecosystem has a few better companies in the mix like Eve and such, but you are not wrong. I have way too much money in Smart home stuff and I'm transitioning from Homebridge to HA.

Agreed but overall I'd argue that the industry hasn't found it's footing yet, so they resort to harvesting user data, selling said data, ads, etc. Then comes the whole subscription SaaS crap mixed in and you come out with an industry that doesn't respect its users in general. Look at how disastrous the Amazon Alexa / Echo ecosystem and how they've been unable to sustainabily monteize the ecosystem.

The IoT industry is collapsing on itself and it would not be wise to further invest into the ecosystem. Home Assistant and Thread/Matter support is the future but it's unclear when that future will come and who will still be left standing.

Don't just buy this Apple TV for Thread/Matter support, buy it for it's great features and user interface. I have a gen 2 Apple TV 4K but there's no reason to upgrade. Thread/Matter shouldn't be a compelling reason for anyone to make this purchase, and if it is, this 64gb is gimped and doesn't have it anyways.

They had a Wi-Fi + Ethernet model on sale for $99.99 a few days back, hence this isn't a great deal.

Here's hoping against hope that the VPN connection will allow apps to think they are connected at the VPN location. That would make the Apple TV the killer MLB.TV box

This can also be done on the router. Had Asus setup that way back when I played with VPN.

Yes, also there is no time machine to grab that deal back and those who missed can grab this one, if interested. Thanks op for sharing the deal.

I totally agree with you.. not sure why Costco even had the 128GB on sale, it was a not readily available anywhere including online. This is a great deal for $99
I don't have a cosco membership so don't know if they were available online or in store, but I was able to price match with best buy and get the deal.

Reason for getting it was because saw a lot of people making comments that it was one of the best for streaming and let me tell you they were right, I've had fire sticks, google, and they were slow and would crash. So far with the Apple TV all the apps open instant, I'm already on Apple eco system so that's a plus.

I'm still waiting on the 128gb to ship.

I'm tempted to order this one as a backup.
