I love this device and it's a piece of mind. It detects sudden significant flows (such as pipe burst) and also detects slow leaks like drips. The app shows PSI pressure and flow rate as well as temperature at the device site. The app sends email every week showing how much water consumed.
When I am out of town, it is set to AWAY mode and it basically shuts the water off. If you have guests or want to wash your car, there is a sleep mode.
My SIL also has this and his insurance company paid him to get this installed (Farmers Ins). I have State Farm and sadly no discount.
I have seen so many leaks with very expensive repairs for a few of my friends. I am surprised that insurance companies don't mandate this.
At this price point, it's a great deal. A bit cheaper than what I paid almost 4 years ago.
Amazon reviews show inner workings. This device uses a turbine in the path of flow with a little magnet on the side. A hall effect sensor probably picks up this magnet and tells RPM to the brain.
This absolutely creates a pressure drop in the system and creates turbulence in the flow thereby reducing it. How much? No clue. Someone would have to put a pretty accurate pressure transducer before and after the valve and determine if it's negligible or not. But any statement that this does not reduce flow or pressure is flat out wrong.
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
My next 2 installations were on PEX so I didn't have the right tools. Those were also in the $200-300 range. Plumbers are expensive.
If you're handy though and have the right tools, I have no doubt that you could install this on your own. It's not rocket science and there are plenty of YouTube instructional videos. For me, the cost of leaks and further property damage easily justified the cost of the device and cost of installation, and if I had more time, I probably would have installed the PEX systems myself. My only piece of advice is to make sure you install it in a location that has access to an electrical outlet. You may want to consider a GFCI for that outlet if it's at risk of getting wet.
And yeah I've thought about the outlet, which I do not have. The main water valve is in a small closet with an exposed light fixture. I wonder if I can tap into it to add an outlet. I'm no electrician but I tend to find my way around things after researching and asking around.

Tons of false alerts and erroneous shut-offs, no matter how many times I tried to "train" it.
Then it died within three years of install; the electronics were shot. The plastic housing isn't watertight, so if you have to put it outside, good luck to you. The warranty is only one year and Moen told me "tough" when I contacted them. I paid a lot to have it installed by a plumber -- that's money down the drain.
After it died I got a Flume for like $35 after utility rebate. The Flume self-installed very quickly. It throws off fewer false alerts. The only downside of the Flume is that it doesn't have a shutoff valve. Eventually I'll probably have a plumber take the Flo off and replace it with a cheap Wi-Fi shutoff valve that works with HomeAssistant or something similar.

Personally, I run HA with SDR USB stick which reads Govee H5054 water leak sensors and does all automations.
