I got this on Walmart deal for $98. Just got my refund. These slowed down my internet and was only getting 1/3rd speed. The signal wasn't even great. I'd totally avoid.

Well if you are connecting all the routers by Ethernet cable than dual is okay but if you are planning to do a wireless setup than tri-band is essential.

Would this be an upgrade to ASUS 3 x RT-AC68U routers ? Mine are finally starting to give up and need to reboot them periodically now.

Edit: Found a review here https://www.pcmag.com/reviews/mot...i-6-system

Edit2: Researched some more. This is not for advanced users. It is a cloud connected router (much like those Google wifi devices but potentially even less flexible). No web ui. Configuration of the router only through their app. And one review on bestbuy mentions the hoops the person had to go through to get the default subnet changed from 10.10.1.x to 192.168.1.x. He apparently had to call their tech support and escalate to higher levels in tech support to get them to change it in their cloud database. Ouch!

does anyone wonder why a compay like motorola would waste their time getting into an already crowded market of routers when they are certainly not known for them?

like what made someone their go "Hey, let's try to make money selling routers"

or was it more of a play to just buy some cheap chinese no name brand and market it as their own and hope to flip some coin b/c people might buy it w/ their name on it?
Just grasping at straws here, but it's probably because they're excellent at at radios (in the most generic sense), and they have a lot of familiarity navigating the regulatory landscape, which is one of the most painful barriers in bringing a wireless product to market.

Dual band that much worse than tri band?
Total garbage, UNLESS you are using wired backhaul. Powerline sucks, but MoCA can be a good option if you have coaxes in rooms you need an access point.

It's a cloud based unit. So your bet is as good as mine in terms of the data and statistics gathering (not necessarily for privacy infringement but perhaps for learning traffic patterns collectively?). Motorola is now part of Lenovo, is it not ?

Is there a good router whether if its a mesh router or not that that has a built in vpn that once I am connected to the internet through that router whether if its with my iPhone or Playstation, the i.p will show a different location rather than the actual real i.p on those devices that I connect to that router?
You can install a vpn on "all" of the Asus routers, but you have to subscribe to a service. I use SurfShark and it is possible to route by device through the vpn. For iPhone you can install SurfShark app. They also have apps for chromecast, Firestick etc., Drop me a line if you want to know more.

Would this do better than a Netgear RAX50-100NAR Nighthawk 6-Stream AX5400 WiFi 6 Router?
If you care about coverage and not speed, then the mesh routers are better. If you care about speed, the mesh WiFi speed will be 1/3 or even less than what the Netgear RAX50 would support.

I'm not sure number 1 is correct. It supports both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. You can't manually separate them like you can on some routers but it will allow for connection on 2.4ghz only devices.

Agreed on number 2 and I'm also not a fan of not having a web interface. Dumb. For port forwarding, there are differing responses to that question on Amazon's page. One person says it doesn't support it while another says it's in the advanced settings in the app. Will find out soon.

My understanding is that it also doesnt support WPA3 and it doesnt have a USB connection either.

All those downsides said, I'm not sure that there is something else that offers the functionality it does have for 50 bucks.
Saw it on amazon reviews: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09Q3JPF1Q/

Searched for 2.4, and there were multiple hits complaining about issues with 2.4ghz. FWIW it doesn't seem to be completely broken, but for devices that cannot connect there was no viable path to resolve.

Motorola is basically just a Lenovo owned licensing brand now. Think Toshiba, Sharp, JVC, Nakamichi, Magnavox, Philips, etc.

Minim has the Motorola licensing rights for home networking.

It didn't say anywhere in the product description or post so a lot of people who are not in the know would buy this thinking it's a smoking deal. It isn't.

I got my TP-Link Deco AXE5300 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6E System Router refurb for $90. TRI-BAND.
How many units and where ?

They are a pretty big player in the modem and modem/router world. Maybe they see this as an extension of that? This model is 2 years old and it doesnt look like they have a ton of new products so maybe they are just dipping a toe in vs. a full cannonball?
