I went through 2 of these in 3 months. They're poorly made. I just ended up making my own with a $20 digital caliper and that's lasted over a year.

The Amazon reviews on this are good and I've seen a number of YouTubers say that they really liked theirs. I have no personal experience with this (though I do want one) I just want to toss that out there.

I have also seen good reviews and many users swear by them, especially for the Dewalt planers. It's really comical to think a rigged "$20 digital caliper" would be more accurate / dependable than a purpose-built product made by Wixey, an affordable brand with a decent reputation. But consider the source...

How do you even calibrate one of these? With a steel plate(s) of known precise thickness?

Steel in contact with your planer blades? No way. I believe you plane a board and use it's thickness to calibrate the unit.

I'd think you go to the feed table planes assuming they're in plane with the blades but that's probably naive.

As a safety, the blades on some models may not lower to the feed table height so that wouldn't work for all brands of planers. Set an arbitrary height, run a board, without adjusting blade height calibrate your Wixey to the freshly planed board, done.
