There are plenty of good, free apps that can image and clone drives. I use Macrium Reflect, but there's Clonezilla, Rescuezilla, Redo Rescue, AOMEI Backupper, and dozens more.

You can download the free version [majorgeeks.com] of Macrium Reflect from reputable freeware/shareware sites, like majorgeeks.com [majorgeeks.com].

Good deal. At the moment though I prefer Samsung due to the easy cloning software. Free cloning programs seem to be getting rare unless you use old versions.

I'm eyeballing some portable SSD drives (that are already in an enclosure)...would it work / make more sense to grab one of these and get an empty enclosure to put it in?

generally-speaking your idea is always the better way to go; you can choose the drive with the specs you want/need, and the enclosure based on your needs (and/or wait for a deal on one or both), and most likely it will still be cheaper than the branded portable external drive Smilie

my experience (and i've seen other people agree as well) is that enclosures/adapters are generally not as reliable/stable as one that was built from the factory to be used as an external drive. i don't have empirical data to support this, so take it with a grain of salt.

i personally would get a portable ssd if that's the main purpose. i use an enclosure/adapter generally to just wipe drives before a fresh install in a pc, or for very quick, temporary transfers (while keeping a backup).

i'm sure there are many people who use enclosures without any issues, so it's up to you. just exercise safe data practices (backups).

I've had the opposite issue, my PNY all-in-one (and Sata M.2 in raid it appears after opening) has problems, while my Sabrent enclosures work great.

One thing though, is on some you may have to update the firmware on the enclosures. Many from off brands that I have like Orico had old firmware that did cause disconnects, but since updating they have been rock solid. I currently have 4 single bay ones and 2 double bay ones in use.

I have several of these drives mounted on PC motherboards and even my PS5 and they work great. However, for some reason the P41's don't work so well in enclosures for me. I've had some reliability issues with these in Sabrent enclosures and others. I generally prefer NVME's with DRAM for enclosures as the OS can mitigate the lack of DRAM on these PCIE 4.0 dram less drives while enclosures cannot.

Yep. Wouldn't work in any external enclosure I tried. Fine in my PC motherboard.

That intel was sold a while back to SK Hynix which made a subsidiary called...Solidigm. It might be a light upgrade but not much you would notice. Was it the same size?

I will bite if this is down to 65 or 670P to 60! Smilie anyway, even I buy one, it could stay in the package for few months.
