Man, tough choices today, this or the tactical pen? I can't tell if this is bolt action or not.

No love for this deal. For a budget knife this is decent metal and with the price/warranty you get a good value for the money.

I saw some vids of knives similar to this chipping, makes me think if you're going to do this kind of work high carbon over stainless is the safer way to go. I don't need anything this big but would rather keep it clean to avoid corrosion knowing it's less likely to break. Maybe the price range is not realistic for a high carbon of similar size though I don't know?

Could be, the two knives are:

1. 8Cr13MoV High Carbon Stainless STEEL
2. Aus-8 (which is really good for this kind of money.
What Is AUS-8 Steel? AUS-8 steel is Japanese made, very similar to 440 steel but with vanadium added to provide more hardness. This is an upper medium quality steel that is favored by many knife makers and designers for its cost-effectiveness as well as its corrosion resistance.

For $30, this is the best deal going imo, which is why I bought one of each. The second one clearly having stronger metal. However the first one is a pretty standard metal for a regular knife.

Well for the price seems great to me, but not everyone is me. I get that. That's what great about freedom. I respect your comments and thoughts. If it chips on my, which it could, then I'm okay as I didn't pay much.

The first link is dead now, it's back to $54. However, it might drop again in a day or two keep an eye on it. That's what happened for me.

The other one is still $30 for now.

I think the people doing bushcraft, batoning etc. might go for a non-stainless high carbon like 1095 or something. I did see one guy who had, I think it was Schrade ship him a new one of one of the stainless models but he's an internet personality and they're also going to maybe take care of someone who can have a significant impact on the image of their company - but the replacement stood up to heavy use. Some of them had it chip after hacking with it just a few times though. I'm not in a position to need it for that kind of heavy duty application but it just has me thinking maybe sacrificing the corrosion resistance for toughness may be the way to go.

Yeah corrosion resistance doesn't mean much to me, you can just dry a blade and oill it. Toughness is better.

Your deal is also nice. They are a few differences which people can decide on.

1. There is no sheath
2. It's a 3" shorter blade
3. Steel differences.

AUS 8 vs carbon steels
1095 steel is widely considered to be the best pure carbon steel for knives. Its carbon content of over 0.9% makes it slightly harder than AUS 8. However, it does not contain any nickel. As we explained earlier, nickel improves the toughness of the AUS 8 alloy.

High carbon steel is actually cheaper than stainless steel usually. This particular stainless (‎8Cr13MoV) is I think around .7% carbon so it would be on the softer side of steels. I imagine it will do a satisfactory job for larger knives by not being too brittle. But really though, I suspect that proper tempering might be a bigger factor in steel performance rather than small differences in chromium or carbon. Besides, this knife I think is 1/4 in thick, even abusing it, knives that thick are hard to break. This knife isn't perfect, but breaking probably wouldn't be one of my concerns. Type of steel choice is more critical with thinner blades but 1/4 in thick is a tank.
