AT&T fiber requires you to use their "gateway" which is their modem/router combo. I never was able to get good wireless speeds with it, it limits how many devices can connect to it, and I only got the 1gigabit speeds when hardwired. Running your own wireless router is actually handicapped in IP passthrough mode, so you need to do a trick with a dumb ethernet switch to bypass the gateway completely.
This reddit post has some good info

My BGW only handles AX clients (only 2 at the moment - both are work computers), and 1 IoT on 2.4Ghz to keep it outside of the home subnet. Asus router handles all the other 20+ home devices over 5/2.4 AC network.
If I were to change the fiber provider I'd only have to redo 2+1 clients, while Asus would immediately pick up whatever connection is there and not notice the switch.
Also, Asus transmission power is upped to the max so that I can cover my 2 story house with just that 1 device and get actual 100+ Mbps rates in the far corners.
It'd be easy to turn off BGW radios, and just keep Asus humming if I needed to. So what I guess I am saying one needs to understand the devices on the network - and perhaps use the ATT router-personal router set up in the most advantageous manner.
P.S. Forgot to add - use something like InSSIDer program https://www.metageek.co
What a ****.
Since when we became a internet central?
I also attest about ATT rep dishonesty, big time!!!

I'm skeptical but we'll see what happens when the next bill comes out otherwise I'll spend the hours on the phone needed to get them to fix it.
edit: Just logged into my account and I see the $55 price.
