Bring wool socks or down booties; a thick hat; and a base layer that covers neck to ankles. You can choose to add or subtract pieces depending on how it turns out. If you're at a campground with electricity, an electric blanket can be awesome. Most tent sites do not have electric.
Generally, a sleeping bag will often be warmer and more convenient but if you're unsure this is your thing you might wait. If you're expecting to love it, Campsaver has some very good deals on Big Agnes: https://www.campsaver.c
I have a Torchlight 20 and very much like it. It's an expandable bag and I like roomy. I returned an adult XL REI Down Time since I found the footbox very constraining.
Good luck!

Down bags pack smaller, but have to be stored uncompressed with nothing on top of them. Our kindercones are just stuffed in their brilliant stuff sack and thrown in the closet.
Down can be trickier to wash and dry, which matters with small children.
This is crazy cheap for down though.
Pretty sure down is more tolerant to being compressed than synthetic. Both should be stored uncompressed ideally but down would sustain less damage than synthetic.
You're definitely right about washing down though.

Anyway, the comparison is against the kindercones, which when stored in its built in sack is fine.
