An important trilogy in the history of epic fantasy. Also the first books in a series spanning many more sequels and prequals.

Sometimes it's knocked for being too derivative of Tolkien. The influence is obvious, but it stands on its own. I do think it's an easier read than LOTR, especially for younger readers.

The individual books typically run much more than this, and the trilogy has never been cheaper. I paid the same price in 2018, but it has not dropped this low since at least 2020.

Just finished the second but for $2.99 why not get all three instead of the last.

It has been openly said by Brooks himself that the Sword of Shannara is a rip off of Tolkien's, but the others are not. The books all feel repetitive as they deal with characters of the same bloodline throughout the series with the exception being the prequel series (angel fire east & it's books + the Genesis series) that follows a different character. I do own all the books and still read them so a good read.

Good question. I watched the live action TV series adaptation a few years ago and it didn't live up to my memories of reading the books from 30+ years ago, but maybe that was due to the adaptation and acting. LMAO
The show was 💩.

Same with the Wheel of Time.

After reading the Hobbit and RA Salavatore books way back when I simply couldn't get into this. I know I'm in the minority and welcome the downvotes lol. Drizzt is my go to dude - most impactful series of my life

As someone who has read waaaaaay too much fantasy, I have to say that the second book in this series, Elfstones, is my favorite fantasy book ever. The MTV TV show was a travesty, and I really wish someone would give these books the Peter Jackson treatment and turn them into good film versions. If you haven't read these before, this is a great deal and definitely recommended. Just consider skipping the first ~70 pages or so of Sword of Shannara (so very slow), or just starting with book #2.

Ah, so there was an MTV show adaptation some years back.

I was wondering how some deal about a random 70s fantasy book from Del Rey was getting 20+ SD comments.

I tried reading the first book and it was painful...I'm not sure if I even made it halfway.

I would categorize it (the first book) as the precursor to Peter Jackson's LOTR but devoid of any life.

Yes, the acting was so bad that I couldn't believe how good Austin Butler was in Elvis. I couldn't believe it was the same actor.

Good book trilogy, the second book (Elfstones of Shannara) is the best in my opinion. If you haven't read Elfstones yet and you decide to, don't be surprised if the story feels familiar, the 4th game in a VERY popular video game series essentially copied the story and just changed a few details (female character changed to male, magic tree changed to magic statue), other details were left essentially the same (chosen one survives assassination of other chosen ones by not being there, chosen one is a relative of the king, demon portals need closing, etc.).

Sword is a ripoff of LOTR, but still fun. And I LOVED the illustrations.

Elfstones is FANTASTIC.

I don't even remember what the third one was called. Wishsong? Druid? It began a long slide for the series that I didn't follow to the end.

I'd definitely recommend the first two though.

The second book, Elfstones, makes reading the trilogy worthwhile. One of my favorite books.

These were my quarantine read. I read the whole series (around 38 books I think). The only ones I didn't enjoy was the trilogy that retold this first trilogy but with different characters.

To the one who brought up Salvatore, I recently read the Demon Wars series - amazing! Salvatore is one of the best fantasy authors. I do love Weis & Hickman too.

Drizzt movies, if done correctly, could be some of the most epic films ever made.

Same. As a kid reading so much other stuff Book 1 was the first book I ever put down intending never to finish. It was... bad. A few years later I picked it up again and made it through as I heard all the sequels were much much better. And they were. Worth suffering through book 1.
