The only tablets I've ever used were iPads. Recently I've switched over to the Samsung Tab S9. Android is just better - more options, settings, ways of doing things. Finally I think the hardware matches or exceeds Apple's which is why I decided to make the switch now.

The deciding point for me was the display quality of the Tab S9. Samsung makes great displays and I don't think they emphasize this enough in marketing messages.

You can find these popping up on Best Buy for $499 for the WiFi models. I just purchased a refurb M1 256 GB 12.9 the other day for $599.

Because MacBook Airs don't have cellular. Or GPS. Or rear cameras. Or a touch screen. And you can't detach the keyboard.

The iPad Pro is a great traveling device. I have a MacBook Pro and and iPad Pro. My MacBook goes with me to and from work, getting docked at home. When I'm not working and traveling, I grab the iPad every time. Back camera, GPS, cellular, touch screen. Way nicer to consume media on. And, side bonus, it acts as an additional monitor for my setup with Sidecar.

MacBooks are also a pain to use on your lap, etc, because you end up blocking the vent ports and they overheat easier. No worries with the iPad.

Sitting at a desk/table? MacBook is better.
Anywhere else? iPad is better.

But if you also have an iPhone pro max that has all of those things (Cellular, GPS, rear camera, touch, etc) there are diminishing returns on the iPad over the MacBook Air, no?

I have an iPad Pro I use as a laptop replacement. I'm on call a lot at work, it goes in my bag. As long as I have service, I'm good. Otherwise I would be required to have a hotspot with me while on call. SIM cards and hotspots have been available for laptops for decades at this point. This is no different.

It's a great deal if you need cellular connectivity on a tablet because even the cheapest tier iPad 10th gen with cellular is $750 new for 128gb and this is much better for $50 more. I have an entirely Pixel/Galaxy household except for iPads because Apple supports tablets for such a long time that it comes out so much cheaper. My iPad Air 2 ($500) had 8 years of OS updates from 2014-2022 (and a security update from 6 days ago, 9/21/2023). During that same interval, I've gone through the Nexus 9 ($400), Pixel C ($500), and Pixel Slate ($800) due to the short lifespan of Android device support. The new Google Pixel tablet ($500) promises 3 years of OS updates and 2 years of security updates. A $900 Galaxy Tab S9 has 4 years of updates. This will outlast both.
