According to the listing these only have 40hrs or less of power on time? Cold storage? Failed servers? Total BS with SMART wiped and ran for 40 hrs? Any thoughts?

Also of note, ServerPartDeals usually doesn't charge you tax (at least for me) so the price difference may be negligible or even a little cheaper with them.
It is kind of scary buying smart wiped mechanical HD's... First questions is why wipe? Second question is why would any sane person buy only 1 of these to store that much data?
I can understand if your put them in software raid then you have a good chance of avoiding the failure demon, but 1 person buying 1 of these drives would be taking a huge risk, essentially blind folded risk.
Whats a good 2 bay or more NAS to buy now a days ... cheap ones
That's a loaded question. I went with the Terramaster f4 210. It's as cheap as it gets. For my case it's perfect as it is only used as a mirrored sync with a das that i have connected to a plex virtual machine for media.

People always mention the "downside" of a large drive being the amount of data you'll lose but that has never made much sense to me. IMO you either have backups or you don't really care about that data in the first place. In either case, buying one of these is fine since you presumably (commence random examples) - have a NAS as a backup target (or some similar setup) OR you're using it as a media drive and don't care if you have to rebuild all that content when a failure occurs.

TY - I will try out this one TERRAMASTER F2-210, found a refurb one for 98.00 and see what I will get. I have a really old Synology 2-Bay, wish they had a trade up program... Really just using it for backups content...

If the manufacture date is APR 2022, then at most these will have 10-12k hours and the power on count will probably 50-150 for each drive if I had to take a guess.

I have built and used a wide verity of custom servers over the decades. Now a days with streaming and cloud archive, I do not do Plex or transcoding so I just like basic NAS capability. I prefer having a small quiet efficient unit with a simple interface. So for me the Synology 2-Bay DiskStation DS223j for $190 was a good fit.

I have 19 HDD's, 15 are 8gig, the rest are a mix of 6 and 4 gig. Swapping in one of these would open up some bay space for me, but It would only be on the backup side...
