An interesting feature of this system is that, unlike many other SFF systems, the MSI platform has historically incorporated a fairly standard-ish ITX motherboard. Because of the laptop brick power delivery you may ultimately be power limited for certain types of expansion (so it's difficult to imagine how to use extra SATA ports, for example).

However, there's something to be said for front USB ports that aren't directly integrated onto a motherboard.

the 12100 version for $150 less with all the same specs seems like a pretty good deal too if you just need a basic computer.

Looks like the same power adapter (rated for 120W) is included for all models. This suggests that the CPU could be upgraded without much concern later.

At the same time, the 120W power adapter suggests that the system has to seriously power limit many of these CPU models, including even the i3-12100(!).

they are 65W tdp cpus, and the ram / ssd / board probably isn't a ton of watts. That said its going to serious limit the turbo / boost wattage. So i'd guess the 12400 or 12100 would actually be more likely to hit their max potential with that psu than the 12700

The limiting of turbo was exactly my concern. When you factor in the minimal cooling solution used in this design, these particularly mini-PCs would unfortunately be akin to laptops whose beefy CPU models suggest high-performance but whose cooling solutions and power settings prove a seriously limiting factor.

This is particularly noteworthy since, starting with the 11th generation, the turbo/boost functionality has been a key method for Intel to continue delivering significant performance gains over prior generations.

Personally, I'd either opt for a potentially lower cost system optimized for a given power target (something like micro form factor Dell PCs equipped with T-series CPUs) or comparable-cost systems capable of delivering maximum labeled performance for the cost (which likely means FlexATX or custom power supplies).
