Quick math assuming you are ok with Visible/Mint at $30/mo - overpaying by $45/mo for 36=$1620, that's what you are paying for the "free iphone".
I have an unlocked phone & pay $20 per month for service. Can't be happier.

Long Answer: I bought an iphone 11 from the Walmart deal to trade in for the iPhone 14 pro. Traded in the phone and started getting credits, also paid off the phone prior to the end of the first month. I addition to starting the Costco $5 per month for 10 months credits I received 2 months of credits, $22.23 and the 3rd month it took away the $22.23 and gave me 3 credits of $9.72, which is the amount for $350. They told me upon contacting them via twitter that the phone I sent in did not power on. I told them that can't be the case as it was new. After sending them photos of my receipt, I got a call from AT&T support and they gave me a $450 credit on my bill since they couldn't figure out how to change the credit amount. They did all of this knowing that the phone was paid off.
Another fun fact. I went to Costco today (it has an AT&T) to upgrade 2 lines and to add a new line and the first employee I talked to said they only do people that switch phone companies. Then a second employee overheard and said I would be better off ordering it online and told me it would be easy. I waited for the third employee and he said it was no problem, the first employee was surprised, the second one just walked away. I was told I can actually bring in the phones there and he would process the trade ins which might save some aggravation regarding the trade ins. The sad part about the second employee is that she was sent in from another state to help this weekend and she didn't even know what could be done.
We just switched from tmo and it has been horrific.

Also you can enter upgrade checkout flow from the Costco links. You have to click around on the top of the webpage on anything that looks like an ATT wireless symbol to get redirected to ATT log-in page, and after you log in, it will recognize your plan, and add the new iPhone as an upgrade instead of a new line.
Update: I finally figured it out - I had to tap the account icon (top right) immediately when the page loaded, before the Costco overlay appeared over it.

Probably a big YMMV. Do it at your own risk.
I wonder if switching phone, but not upgrading will discontinue the credit. Seems like the people on the thread kept using the same phone after paying it off.
