Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

You keep spouting false information. There is an apple tv version. My friend uses it to access my jellyfin from his Apple TV. But to be honest, if you are on the Apple ecosystem, it's best to just stick with the Apple services and pay for those. You aren't meant to use anything else if you choose the locked-in stuff Apple lets you use.

For those interested in actual facts: There's no strict from-the-OP Jellyfin client for AppleTV.

There are third party apps that work with Jellyfin, like Swiftfin.

This is one reason why Plex owns the market, and can charge - they have far better coverage of (just about every device on the planet), with very little to no question of what will and won't work.

The Apple commentary immediately above is useless, needless, and wrong.

Someone who gets it. Swiftfin is a third party app, in beta. There is a major bug where it logs you out every 24 hours. There is a huge post of commenters with the same issue and no one is still not exactly sure why the app does it. After about 2 days of dealing with it, I gave up and went back to Plex.

I'm a tinkerer and love to run my own open source services but I can't really recommend Jellyfin over Plex based on access to apps along with more advanced features.

Plex or Jellyfin?

I've never touched a jelly fin, but I do have experience with Kodi. That old addage sounds like this: Cheap Good Free More Better. I'm not sure there is a right/wrong answer here.

Plex newbie... I put some personal movies, converted from HI8 tapes, and added them to Plex (the only items I currently have on Plex lifetime). But for some reason Plex has assigned an image from the web as the movie cover. How do I get rid of it or replace it with something else. It just looks funny when you have a movie of kids and it is showing an inappropriate cover from a commercial movie. Would like to delete the covers on those movies before sharing with my family.

Suggestions?

There are a few different ways

1) For each item, you can select the "pencil" icon to Edit the item manually.
2) For each item, you can select the "..." and hit "Fix Match"
3) For a library, you can tell it to use Agent : "Personal Medial"(or something like that) instead of IMDB/INternet matching. It will pick a random screen shot from the video to show. But in the folder, you used to be able to put a "folder.jpg" and it would use that in the Library view. https://support.plex.tv/articles/...ts-movies/

Have a few TB of media that I just plugged into a USB port on my tv to watch it. Last year I picked up a Nvidia Shield and got Plex set up on it with my media. Wow! Wish I would have done it years ago. Just purchased the Plex Pass since I figure I owe them something. Thanks OP👍

I know this is a long shot but any way I can link my cable providers tv app to my plex server so I can watch my cable channels away from home?

You could buy a compatible digital tuner and add it to your Plex server.

Just why, would you ever want to do that? You folks are doing or seemingly wanting to do everyday simple things in weird ways. And for some reason ya all seem to want to pay for something that has always been FREE or otherwise all inclusive. I'm really trying to understand.

Nah, Plex likes using the slur "Latinx" in its marketing emails. Screw Em.
