Beware if you host your "content" on dedicated servers. They started implementing IP blocking, so if your hosting your stuff on Hetzner, or services with Hetzner IPs they will start blocking access. Not sure how long before it moves to other providers.

Are you trying to figure out what Plex is or what the Plex Pass is?

Plex has two pieces. One piece is the server. You would install a program called Plex Media Server on your computer. Then you tell Plex the location of all your movies and media you own. It scans everything and organizes it.

Then you go to your smart tv devices (fire tv, android box, roku, etc) You can install the Plex CLIENT on these and watch the movies from your Plex your server.

Plex is free if that is how you use it.

The Plex PASS is just some additional features for Plex. It lets you watch movies on your phone/mobile devices. You can download movies from your server. It allows "hardware transcoding". Skip intro/skip credits, etc.

I'll be the first.

Plex lost their way long ago. I want (and bought) to play local media, not have them push their stream crap on me.

Long time Emby user. Love it. UI isn't as polished as Plex but it's worth the effort to use because of my hate for plex streaming.

Also JellyFin.

Just why, would you ever want to do that? You folks are doing or seemingly wanting to do everyday simple things in weird ways. And for some reason ya all seem to want to pay for something that has always been FREE or otherwise all inclusive. I'm really trying to understand.
It would save setting up a vpn server and having to vpn into my home network to watch my cable channels. Certain channels on the app only work while on the home network.

I'm curious, if I've got a local media server to stream my own media, what are the advantages of the Plex pass? Free access to their streams? I'm not really planning on streaming from the server to a mobile device
Plex pass lets you skip intros and credits. It lets you stream to your mobile devices (rather than buying the app per device). You can download movies to mobile. Depending on your server, it lets you do hardware transcoding. Some hardware like the Shield includes transcoding with no plex pass required.

Here's the full list: https://support.plex.tv/articles/...plex-pass/

I don't see any killer must-have features unless you need hardware transcoding. If you're already using plex and don't need anything else I'd keep doing the free thing.

Can I link my real debrid account to Plex?
Yes, there's a project called plex_debrid: https://github.com/itsToggle/plex_debrid There's nothing specific to plex_debrid that would require a plex pass.

I'm considering setting up plex_debrid because Stremio hasn't gotten around to Apple support (and they may never). I'm hoping that will be a better interface on my iphone.

Plex can do a lot. ..... .
Reading you and t3t4 going at it back and forth was interesting. I think neither of you was technically incorrect. It just sounds like debate was about why would anyone needs Windows/MacOS UI? Command line is just fine. worship

Regardless bandwidth, quality, transcoding, accessibility ... I wouldn't put my grandma (or my wife) in front of a smart TV or an iPad without an app such as Plex (or Jellyfin) client. Being a techie myself, I really enjoy all the automation Plex has done - category, metadata, validation, UI ... etc. I put video files into appropriate folder then later turn on TV, they are there, simple and pretty. I use Plex for many years, I passed on $75 pass, then last year twice $84 (30% off) and $90 (25% off) again. Now I really need it so I will go for this 20% off. I need its OTA and DVR features because this year I cut off my $90/m DirecTV subscription, and don't opt to pay Spectrum cable TV $50/m (was $30 earlier this year.) Frown

Sure they don't LOL.
Why allow all data to phone home to their offices then ?
If you are one of those "don't believe" the contractual terms and agreements they have made with their customers then there is no basis for discussion as no data or information will inform such a mindset. Conspiracy away "they are the devil and out to smush pirates!"

I think it's pretty darn clear in their agreements and privacy policy exactly why the phone home, what they collect why they collect it how it helps the user and how it helps them while protecting the privacy of personal library details. There were obviously very thoughtful about how they constructed those provisions to be suitable, necessary and not overreaching.

I wanted to run Jellyfin on Mac mini with M2 instead of Windows or Ubuntu. I found that Jellyfin has no Apple silicon version yet. So it needs to run Rosetta 2 emulator. Not good for my use case. Hmmm.

See how fast you can make the unstable build crash.

Any reason not to just put it in a docker with all the -arrs ?

There's also a recent plex subreddit post about someone who had their "account banned" then "unbanned" for using their plex account in some way that plex didn't approve of (i.e. they accused him of collecting payment for access to his server, without any evidence whatsoever). After "reviewing it" they unbanned him. The kicker is that they also e-mailed all of his family/friends on the server basically accusing him of being a pirate.

IMHO, super concerning that they are suddenly making these determinations AND are collecting enough data about you to believe they are able to do so. My recommendation (as a plex lifetime subscriber) is to just us jellyfin. It's free, and doesn't snoop on you + try to police how you use it.

I went ahead and spun up a docker for Jellyfin to see how it compared to my existing plex. Jelly fin shows a lot of promise and I believe it COULD be a total plex replacement at some point. However, I found too many QoL things missing from Jellyfin even after watching a lot of YT and reading posts about essential Jellyfin plugins. Jellyfin transcoding has a lot of stuff needed under the hood that you really need to know what you're doing. Also, the Live TV with a HDHomeRun tuner GUI was not as easy to navigate or even view.

Jellyfin really shines with its user and library customizability tho. I really did enjoy that - and their "Collections" library *chefs kiss*

You should do that regardless. I don't trust open public networks.

Can you post the URL to that thread? My recollection of that thread on Reddit is people _guessed_ that's what happened, (people LOVE to hypothesize!) but nobody ever said Plex Co. actually emailed anyone (except an email to the owner of the server).

What, exactly, that Plex is sending has you concerned? I mean, someone in the middle would be able to see a lot of traffic over port 32400, and someone could guess that's Plex traffic, and someone could attach to your 32400 (because it's public...) and see that pretty easily (but couldn't log in). Otherwise, what's to see, what would someone care? The actual traffic data is encrypted.

https://support.plex.tv/articles/...20to%20you.

You should read that.

Do you encrypt your Netflix traffic with another layer too? How far does this go?

I had a few issues with my JellyFin testing, mostly with an iPad:

1. The move from (I'm using my iPad on my network) to (I'm using my iPad externally) isn't intuitive. And unless one knows one's unchanging public IP (and/or using a Dyn-DNS type service) keeping track of this information isn't trivial. For the non-technical, this likely would exclude JellyFin on the spot.

2. Setup (see above, IP addresses) is far from intuitive. This is what Plex gives you with that horrible "centralized" login everyone loves complaining about - once you (or a user) are logged in, you don't have to worry about finding any servers you have access to; from that point it's all automatic.

3. I couldn' t get my HDHomerun going. Yes, I could find it and add it, but I couldn't see how to get guide data (free). I suppose I could pay for a service to do that, but if I am doing that, why not just get PlexPass and get ALL the cool features? $35/year for the guide they recommend (https://www.schedulesdirect.org/.), vs. Plexpass $90/forever. No brainer - get a PlexPass!

Plex newbie... I put some personal movies, converted from HI8 tapes, and added them to Plex (the only items I currently have on Plex lifetime). But for some reason Plex has assigned an image from the web as the movie cover. How do I get rid of it or replace it with something else. It just looks funny when you have a movie of kids and it is showing an inappropriate cover from a commercial movie. Would like to delete the covers on those movies before sharing with my family.

Suggestions?
On bottom left corner of the image is an edit icon that looks like a pen. Click that then click poster. Click "choose an image" hyperlink and upload whatever image you want to replace with. Save and you're done.
