Because in reality the expiration date is only a suggested shelf life. The product doesn't know to just stop working on a given date. It's honestly one of the biggest scams to get people to buy a new product based on an expiration date. I work in supply chain and see so many items get tossed because of an expiration date. From a Harvard study: "90% of more than 100 drugs, both prescription and over-the-counter, were perfectly good to use even 15 years after the expiration date." (https://www.health.harvard.edu/st...20to%20use.) YMMV

don't toss expired test kits until you've checked here:

These are pretty useless. I know of multiple people who ended up with Covid and for all of them the kit showed negative. Only a PCR test confirmed the infection.
Not sure why so many downvotes for this comment. It happened with me a year ago. Three freaking tests 3 days in a row (different manufacturers), all 3 came back negative. I had all the symptoms and PCR came back positive. All rapid tests were within expiration dates and were done according to instructions.

They will tell you you are sick, which you probably already know. They will not tell you that you have Covid. FROM THE FDA WEBSITE:
What At-home COVID-19 Antigen Tests Do Not Tell You:
If you have another type of respiratory illness, such as flu or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), unless it is a test specifically authorized for detection of these viruses.

a.k.a. useless
Means the exact opposite of what you seem to think it means.

While I think COVID testing is important, I do agree the at home tests have a poor false negative rate. This shouldn't really be controversial, it's just statistics. But they are better than nothing in many circumstances. PCR if you can or use at home tests as an alternative or first line of detection. I think people are jumping to conclusions and down voting you because they believe you lean a certain way politically.

Actually it's very accurate...
It may not detect from the early stage, but it will detect when the symptoms are obvious

Nothing is free…Everything comes with a cost..Thank a taxpayer for your kits….
Do you think people don't know this? Should the thread read, "Taxpayer-subsidized COVID tests"? On a forum like this the purpose of "free" is to tell people that there's no out-of-pocket costs. I doubt anyone on here was under the impression that these were manna from heaven

Usually user error, not collecting properly is usually a cause of false pos/neg results for all point of care (PoC) type testing. Also, PoC testing should always be confirmed with the prevailing methodology of testing (Pcr usually these days). The rapid test is just for convenience and to help take load off the main method of testing. Typically they are far less accurate as well.

I dont think they read what they wrote. No, it will not tell you if you have something else. It will only tell you if you do or do not have COVID. Also will not signal for something else.

They've worked for me and my family every time we've gotten it (teacher in the family so high exposure chances) over the past few years. Even asymptomatic ones.

I hope it's not the orange box ones. Will say those were useless to me. I could test when I know I had covid and they always showed negative when every other test shows positive.
