Before anyone chimes in on a $100 Monoprice strat copy being as good, they're not unless you put $250 into it. But you'll always have a guitar that is worth $50 on the used market.

You can always sell this 2 years from now for what you paid for it or more.

This is a deal for a solid guitar. The quality and resale value make it great buy.
I've bought those Mono strats. Anyone who says they're on par with a MIM is full of shit. They're on par with a Squier Bullet at best. We get it, you're broke. Nothing wrong with that. But to try to preach this nonsense is absurd.
Excellent price. Getting back to the new old price

I bought one of the Telecasters. I have never seen a guitar so badly in need of a set-up. The neck was extremely bowed, and because of that intonation was so far off that the guitar was completely unplayable (even open chords sounded terrible). It seems like the truss rod was completely loose. I had to do a pretty extreme truss rod adjustment - more than I've ever done on any guitar, so I was a bit nervous. But I have it maybe 90% to straight now. I'm going to give it a day to settle in at this new position, and then fine tune it a bit more. Intonation is just slightly off now, and I expect I won't even need to adjust it once I have the neck straight.

The only other issue I see is there is a faint line visible under the finish towards the base of the guitar. It looks possible like the joint where the two pieces of wood were glued together to make the body. You can't feel it in the finish, so I think it must have been there before they applied the finish. It's sort of surprising as I would have thought they sand the guitars well before applying finish.

I'm planning on keeping the guitar because it's a hassle to return, but if it was a local purchase I'd be returning it.

BTW - the Tele has the nice bridge - I think that's not standard for the normal Player series (maybe that's what makes it "Limited Edition?)

My pleasure! I ended up doing this last year lol. Went with the $150 squier and then bought a much more expensive Fender Ultra Strat this year as a treat to myself. Applause

Actually glad I did that, because going in I was interested in a les paul but then I ended up falling in love with the strat shape. Sooo.. yeaa....

Also, again, a lot depends on budget too. (in a way). I bought my first guitar last year on a whim and really really wasn't sure how I'd like it. Up till then I was 100% going to buy a piano lol. So I didn't wanna commit $500-1000 just to see if I'd like it.

Like, certainly, the Fender Player will feel nicer in the hands than the Squier. There may be some concern that the Squier would be so bad as to turn someone off to playing. I don't know... maybe? The fret finishing on mine isn't that great - doesn't bug me at all for practicing chords but when I was practicing a song where you do a slide on the higher frets it would bother me. You run into stuff like that.

Also at $150 for the squier affinity when it goes on sale, any repair (or even a $100 setup) feels kinda ridiculous. So does buying an amp - most of the amps cost more than the guitar. A focusrite scarlet costs more. A mustang micro costs $89 on sale and that's more than half the cost lmao.

I'll add another recommendation: Take a look at the threads about PRS SEs. They are going into the $450-500 range and your son may find those cool too. AFAIK those are also great guitars.

I think you really can't go wrong either way Big Grin

Thanks again

The bridge is standard for the Player series. The Lake Placid Blue color makes it "Limited Edition."

What's the difference between the Stratocaster and Telecaster? Which one is better for a beginner? My daughter has been playing an acoustic for a little while but she really wants an electric guitar. $529 is a little higher than what we had budgeted ($400 w/ amp for new or used was what we have saved), but we know nothing about electric guitars so hoping some of you can offer some advice. Sounds like some very experienced guitar players in here…

There are a lot of alternatives that can fit the budget better. Unless you daughter specifically wants this guitar, I wouldn't worry about it too much. You should probably make a visit to a guitar store and see what she's interested in and then go from there.

Unfortunately this is the cheapest fender stratocaster/telecaster you can get right now.

My daughter don't actually know the differences between all of the electric guitars…She just knows that she wants one lol. I'm trying to do some research to help her choose something decent, as I want her to have a good experience; hoping it would motivate her to play it more. I think taking her to a guitar center is a great idea! I just hope we don't get oversold by the sales guy that just wants to make a sale. Thanks for your response.

The good news is you can get a really good guitar at any budget. I bought a Harley Benton Telecaster for $115 (+$80 shipping...) and it's a really good guitar. In fact, unlike this Fender, which obviously somehow missed the setup step on the assembly line, the HB was set up pretty well. I think most stores won't try to oversell a dad and his daughter, but do your research before you go and they won't have that option. Going in person is ideal because a guitar is such a personal thing. Stay on the low end because if your daughter sticks with it, she's likely going to want something different down the road. Also, the amp is probably a more important choice.

I was thinking a very low end one might give her a bad impression and discourage her from playing but you're right, she may end up wanting to upgrade in the future regardless. I was originally looking at it more as a one and done purchase, but your advice makes a lot of sense. Thank you very much for that perspective!
