With mirrorless, it's not really an issue but my experience with talking to canon is that they put each refurbished piece of gear through a number of additional testing points to make sure there aren't any issues.
I know that brand new cameras also have quite a bit of testing, but for my use cases (accuracy of focusing at f/1.2 or f/1.4 on a DSLR), it worked out that I had better luck on the refurbished stuff.
I prefer buying new, and have lately with the switch to mirrorless, but the refurbished stuff has always been great to me and has performed better than some items purchased new (for my use cases listed above)
This older, entry-level FULL FRAME mirrorless camera will beat out all but the best DSLRs in terms of handling, quality, performance, etc. And you'll have a really hard time beating the value for the price at $600 -- there are many middling DSLRs which cost just as much that perform far worse.
$100 more for the 24-105 lens is a bargain too. It's not the strongest performing lens, but for most, it'll be completely fine. "Better" is subjective to one's needs, and often comes with a massively higher price tag.
The ugly parts:
- It has a tiny battery, you will need spares.
- The frames per second (FPS) is not very aggressive -- so for sports or fast action, you may not be as happy.
- Some people don't appreciate the smaller body size.
- It's not that great with video (compared to newer Mirrorless), though it can do it (and do it far better than many mobiles).
Comparing this body to newer bodies like the R8 (considered by many to be the RP mkII) will be a night and day comparison. But then again, the RP is a $600 body against the far newer $1300-1500 R8.
But...pairing this $700 combo with the RF100-400 lens on refurb sale for $380, you have an entry-level kit that'll last you quite a few years of use. And you'll have something really solid and good quality during that whole time as you develop your technique -- once you get to the point where you outgrow these tools, you'll be able to clearly articulate what exactly you'd want to upgrade to.
And with a $100 EF-to-RF adapter, you can adapt pretty much any EF lens made since like 1987. Such a wonderful library of cheap, expensive, high quality, and basic lenses to choose from -- both from Canon or from third parties.
A nice third lens could be a "nifty 50", a 50mm 1.8 -- either canon RF or EF w/ adapter. These can be found for around a $100. Personally, I like a little bit wider with the 16mm prime or 35mm prime, as those smaller & lighter primes really pair well with such a small body.
As for accessories:
- I don't believe in UV/protection glass filters (unless I'm in actively hazardous environments), as even the best B+W Multicoated ones cast nasty reflections. I prefer to shoot with a lens hood (third party ones are cheaper than Canon's) -- the hood cuts down on glare while giving "bump protection" for the front element.
- Neckstrap - a personal choice, but you can't go wrong with popular options like Peak Design or Blackrapid.
- Camera bag - another personal choice, but popular brands include Lowepro, Tamrac, Case Logic, and Ruggard. Remember, there are so many varieties from entry level quality to pro tier. Some people even use diaper bags, as they're padded and discrete.
- Memory card -- buy from non-Amazon (as they often sell counterfeits). Places like Best Buy, Adorama, or B&H Photo are good. I'd get multiple smaller cards like 64-128gb name brand cards like Lexar, Sandisk Extreme Pro, Sony, Prograde than one giant 256gb card. V30 speed should be fine for most use, V60 will be excellent if you're shooting RAW photos or 4K video all the time.
I believe canon will also give a 10/15/20% discount if you call in and have an existing Canon DSLR/Mirror less body serial #. Not sure if the specifics on that but I'm sure someone more familiar can share
