The catch with this model is security updates end in February 2024 - so about 5 months from now.
Can anyone link to ONE case of a normal person (not someone being targeted by a government/FBI/CIA) being hacked by using an android phone that hasn't been security updated in a couple years?
All the apps on the play store are automatically virus scanned by google.
Are people downloading sketchy apps from outside the play store and they need the OS level security patch to save them? Is that the people who need these security updates?
If the app is on the play store, it will keep getting updates there. E.g. google chrome browser is updated through the play store. So you will keep getting those even if your android device no longer gets security updates, as long as the android version is supported.
Besides the fear mongering can anyone point to any specific examples of a bad outcome here? And not an example of someone being hacked by CIA/MOSSAD/KGB.

It's worth noting that your statement about apps in the Play store being "virus scanned" implies that they're guaranteed to be safe. They're not. Lists of Play Store apps which have been discovered to contain malware are released on a fairly regular basis and it's alarming how long some of these apps remain available for download before being outted.
That said, yes, most people should stick to the Play Store vs. side loading.

Just like Windows, don't click on fishy links. Do not download unknown/sideload apps onto phone.

I got this phone from Boost, then unlocked and use on T-Mibile. It shows 5G UC and gets upto 200 Mbs download speed, while Samsung S21 on the same T-mobile gets up to 500 Mbs download. Perhaps Boost has different revision of the phone with 5G unlocked?

There are a number of key differences between the 4g and 5g models of this phone. The 5g offers a larger screen, 120 hz refresh rate, 1000 mAh larger battery and slightly faster processor.
I bought the 5G model and am not impressed. It's laggy and the battery life went to hell after it updated to Android 13. That was after being disappointed in the 2021 model. Motorola's mid-priced phones are not what they used to be.

First link says the app was not on play store.
Second link is NSO group / Israeli gov spyware, we're probably not one of their targets.
Anyway I agree with the other people, I don't plan on downloading sketchy stuff.
So my original question still stands. Has any normal person ever been hacked, assuming they only use the top 100 apps on Google playstore?
