Correct....but sometimes persistence pays off, and they "bend the rules". However, it's a good practice to either avoid purchasing "non-returnable" items from Amazon or to read the negative reviews (vs. the positive reviews) to see if it's worth talking the risk. Price plays a big role here. If it's super cheap, then it's less of a risk.
If that's the case (and you have the time to spend contacting them), consider yourself fortunate. Do it excessively, and you're not likely to be so lucky the next time. They typically let you keep the damaged/defective item. I'm certain that many take advantage of that, and that's why they'll crack down if you do it too many times.
