Quest 2 was sold at a loss and subsidized by Facebook (the company). Quest 3 is not.

As a VR studio owner and developer, it is worth it. Completely different machine and capabilities. As long as you don't need face/eye tracking which is highly use case dependent, then this is the way to go. It will be the market leader for at least a year or more and they won't refresh for at least 18 months or two years plus. Also, it has the biggest free roam library with their storefront which also still able to play all PCVR games wirelessly.
It really will be the best all around headset on the market and that doesn't even cover the boom of MR games that are going to come with this. All of us are rushing to make games for this emerging market. $499 ain't a bad price.

I know this is a big jump in price. The Quest 2 was released at $299 and then had it's price increased to $399 (which was ridiculous imo). I don't know if the Quest 3 is worth another $100 raise to $500 but hoping some here can find the $50 discount helpful.

Wish they had the 512 version available.
512 version is available on the same page as an option ($650), still available for release date shipping/pickup

ditching the frenel lenses makes this a worthy upgrade to me.

Yeah it won't be better for gamers than the PSVR2...definitely will be better for other things.

Once they have Oled screens (grayish "black" LCD ruins immersion in a lot of games), HDR, Headset haptic feedback, and Eye tracking with foveated rendering it will be an even fight.

But PSVR2 is king for gamers right now, especially since devs have already begun (sadly) focusing less on PCVR and more on Meta headsets and PSVR2.

Too expensive, unlike other multitasking capable devices such as smartphones and computers, VR headsets are new game consoles, which means for most people the headset will just be an rarely used expensive toy.
Yea, maybe for you.
Not most people.

Anything on the MR "female companion" side?
Asking for my wife.

Honestly it's silly, emerging tech is supposed to have a downward trend as adoption increases. Obviously this isn't downward, so maybe adoption isn't as good as they expect. Either that or they just don't know what they're doing on the production side of things.
I'd argue it is downward.

Value wise, there is a lot more here for your money than there was for $400 Quest 2 128GB.

Plus Meta is shifting to a sustainable biz model. I suspect they're possibly breaking even on cost with the Quest 3 vs losing tens of billions with the Quest 2 by selling it for below cost.

Will bite if I can trade in the quest 2 I have. Otherwise I don't want to have exceed devices at home especially since it takes a lot of space
Yeah would love to be able to do this. I have to do a factory reset on my quest 2. So now's the perfect time.

Anyone have some ideas on how to flip it? Do people actually buy these used or?

Psvr2 is a nice device, but requires quite a commitment (PS5 + VR2) and comes with it's own variety of issues (being tethered). I've had one since launch and love it, but the quest line is very much different as it's a standalone unit, can play its own (quest) games or airlink to a PC for PCVR.

PSVR2 also has a bit of a limited set of games so far. A few carryovers from PSVR1, a few new titles, but not many must haves. Hoping that changes in the near future. I'd love if they added VR content to existing games, no matter how small. A VR viewer for cyberpunk would be awesome.

I don't see much real review about this device. quest 2 doesn't have a theatre mode so when it's dark I cannot use it to watch a movie. I wonder if quest 3 is different. also vspatial was really blurry on quest 2 so there's no office use. there are some HMD out there but from reviews they are not really that great other than being much lighter. I bought quest 2 around $240 and I haven't used it much recently. that ray-ban smart glasses priced at $299 seems way too high too.

People do buy these things used, and last I checked it was for a surprisingly decent amount.

It seems weird to buy something that people have been strapping to their heads and sweating in, especially post(?)-covid.

The controllers alone seem to sell for at least $100. The headset combo jumps around in price between about $150-200, likely depending on condition and what's included. Piecing it out might honestly be the bigger payout. Left controller, right controller, headset as 3 separate sales
