Do NOT put the A53 SIM in any other phone. Tracfone pairs phone IMEI and SIM ICCID, so they may re-pair the IMEI/ICCID when you put the SIM in another phone, which may impact the service and unlock. (To request unlock using the TFW unlock portal, it will ask for the phone IMEI as well as the active phone # associated with the IMEI.)

The a53 is a solid phone, but after playing with both the a53 and a54, the latter is the clear winner. Screen is nicer on the a54, chip is more powerful and the camera rates much higher (see DXO) for stills and video. Metro has the a54 at $49.99 and available online to escape the dealers and their nonsense. Cricket also has the a54 at $99.99 with port in. Both require a 6 months of service to unlock.

That MetroPCS deal doesn't require 6 months of paid service, just that you wait 6 months after activation because it auto-unlocks.

Does anyone have experience with this specific A53? Is it really fully compatible with other carriers after unlocking? Last time I used TracFone was 8 years ago and their phones had custom hardware and custom firmware. I think this version is Verizon specific. Like will apn, 5G, volte and wifi calling work on all carriers? Do we need to worry about missing bands?

Is a54 that much better? Or just slightly better in more than 1way? If you didn't have both side by side, could you notice the difference?

Just placed an order for this one; can't wait to unlock it and use it on Mint Mobile in about 2 months. I bought a Pixel 6a last December and I am not happy w/it at all.

I'd like to know this well. Was planning to buy 2 for international use (gift to parents) but this gets me thinking again, what bands will it have and how will the local carrier performance be?

It doesn't matter if your phone is unlocked if it's not whitelisted by the particular carrier that you want to migrate to. This particular phone can't be taken to AT&T or AT&T MVNOs, for example, because this particular model of Samsung A53 5G is not on the AT&T whitelist.
