Sparkfun also has them for preorder. They have the US power adapter, as well, but you can supposedly power them with the older rpi4 power adapter if you don't mind reduced performance.

On The Pi Hut site, the pages and cart are in USD, but the checkout is in GBP (and around the same numbers for price). Assuming they really mean that and an 8GB (66 GBP), case (8 GBP), and cooler (4 GBP), plus shipping (12 GBP) totals around 90 GBP, which converts to about $110 today.

On sparkfun, the 8GB ($80), case ($10), and cooler ($5) total $95, but you can add the $12 power adapter to hit $107 and get free shipping (starts at $100).

If someone can confirm that The Pi Hut's USD prices are what we'd actually get charged, I'd like to know, since the exchange rates would make that a better deal.

Edit: Went as far as the paypal checkout. Paypal has an even worse exchange rate than DDG, so the Pi Hut order would be $114.27 right now. Without a PSU.

I was waiting for the 5. But this update is more of a nothing burger, especially the IO. I would probably get one rpi 5 for fun but thats it. I will go for orange Pi/intel n100 for my cluster node. I think they are the superior opyions to the pi 5. (I already have rpi 4 and rpi zero)

You don't actually need the cooler if you buy the case. They specify that the $5 cooling fan is for if you want to run your Pi5 without a case. So $102 all in. Note that the free shipping is NOT insured. The cheapest insured shipping option I see is about $15.

M.2 is not NVME. M.2 is just a physical connector plug type. It can carry USB, PCIE, NVME and/or SATA.

The Pi5 doesn't have an M.2 connector. It has a connector for a flex cable. This connector supports PCIE but not USB.

If you want to use a Cellular modem pcie card, which expects USB pins on a PCIE slot, it won't work without a pcie-to-usb controller to convert the pcie lane to an m.2 USB connector.
while you are technically correct that was not the basis of the question that was being answered. The person asked about nvme drives, someone else responded there's pcie onboard, the user then asked about the m.2 slot vs the pcie onboard header.

I'm going this route. If you're getting the case you don't need the special cooler, the cooler is meant for no-case applications. So $102 for 8GB/case/power, which also qualifies for free shipping. If you've already got pi's you don't need their start kit, you'll probably already have HDMI cables and other misc stuff that comes in those.

I've always wanted to set up an VPN server using PI. Does PI5 work for an VPN server?

I don't understand how these are supposed to compete with a mini pc anymore unless you really need the gpio. You can get a fully built N100/N95 mini pc with ram, an NVME drive and a included power adapter for only a few bucks more.

Anyone know if this would be a good upgrade to a pi 4 for a retro emulation setup?

Yeah, looks absolutely awesome as an update. Loses out spec wise to some alternatives, but Pis have the best support

These were originally intended for educational purposes, to teach children how computers and software actually work. The problem then became that they were actually powerful enough to run certain applications very efficiently, so they took off in the hobbyist realm, and so the price has gone up and up and up.

The original RPIs were around $30.
