These kits include a carboard spacer in the bottom of the case to make it look like it's completely full of product. Remove that (or flip it around so it nests in the bottom - it's open on one side) and there's plenty of extra room for a Bic mini lighter, fresnel lens, book of matches, a birthday candle, vaseline-impregnated cotton balls, etc. An even more complete fire starting kit.

The amount of people on this thread saying the same thing over and over is ridiculous. "Har har bic lighter better". You don't need this? This deal isn't for you. Move along.

Here's a cheaper, easier to use fire kit: a mini bic and some laundry lint. Or other kindling of your choice, but there's no reason to spend $12.

I used to have fire starters of various types until I realized that I could just carry an extra mini bic on my camping trips.
the main benefit of this is being able to fly with it in your entire backpacking set, right?

just buy a bunch of lighters, and waterproof matches and shove them in an airtight container. So much easier. I guess this appeals to the Neanderthals in all of us

Or you could buy 4 lighters, essentially all this "kit" is.

homemade fire starter is to soak or coat cotton balls with Vaseline and store in a small canister. Once upon a time in bygone days there was this thing called photographic film, and I used an old film cannister for this purpose.

Yes, assuming you can rationalize getting four of them. Otherwise, look beyond the per-unit cost and just buy a single one on Amazon for $7.48 [amazon.com], which is still an excellent price for what you're getting. I bought a 2-pack of these for $10 the last time for they were on sale. The UST Spark Force ferrocerium firestarter alone sells for about $10, so getting the whole kit for $7.48 or less is a no-brainer. I pulled the trigger after watching this YT review [youtu.be] of the Spark Force firestarter.

If you end up buying, practice with some cotton balls on a cookie sheet at home (save the Light Me tinder for when you really need it). Tease the cotton ball apart a bit and don't push the scraper across the firesteel towards your tinder, or you'll just end up swatting the tinder away from you. Hold the scraper stationary next to the tinder material and drag the the firesteel towards you. It's easier to do than I'm making it sound. It only takes a bit of practice to reliably start good tinder on the first or second stroke.

There's something very elemental and satisfying about being able to kindle flame in the traditional manner without a match or lighter. Yes, it's still infinitely more convenient to just use a butane lighter or wooden match. But if you're into prepping, bushcraft or just want to impress your car-camping friends, it's a useful skill to have. You just never know.

Still best for me, and easy to do. Used to make these in my Boy Scout days many moons ago.

Yes the fire starter itself is worth $15. Good little kit can add a few more items

Car gets stuck in an ice/snow storm...find some tinder, start a fire, don't freeze to death.
