Costco has a discount on their Honeywell (Generac) standby generators.
This deal includes the discount, which lines up with a Generac promo offering a free 10yr warranty.

There are three options from Costco:

14kw option for 3,799: 600 off w/ 10yr warranty: https://www.costco.com/.product.4000145693.html

This purchase includes the generator unit and auto transfer switch (switch size dependent on model, some are 200a while the smaller one is 100a)
Price also includes threshold delivery (to your house, in the garage)

I'm working on getting install quotes for the 22kW Honeywell today - seems like a really solid deal for a rebranded Generac with a 10 year warranty.

Can this power an entire home (4000+ sf)? If this DIYable if you have some intermediate knowledge/skill in home projects?

I'm sure the installation costs will vary widely depending on the home setup but do you have any idea where these quote are shaking out? What is the general expectation? $1000? $5000?

Is it challenging to find someone to do this install after telling them you already have the generator?

It should be able to power it easily unless you are charging a EV while running two ac units. Our house uses around 11kw peak with the ACs. EV would be 8k or so above that so cutting it real close.

I'd love to get this but the install costs scare me, even though our gas and electrical hook ups are on the same side as our garage and located next to it.

I think the gas line might need to get enlarged since the house gas line originally was only sized for the stove/water heater/HVAC.

Here is the Generac sizing calculator: https://www.generac.com/for-homeo...-generator

As for the DIY install - part of it is pretty straightforward, like getting the site ready or making the pad for it to sit on. The fuel and electrical hookups are the hardest part, but you can sub those out if you want.

These require annual servicing as well - oil and filter change. This can be done by authorized service or you can do it yourself. They will "exercise" on a schedule and report issues as well. Have been waiting on a deal, and jump when I saw the discount stacked with the warranty.

If you are planning on having the generator installed near the gas meter then you can run it directly off the meter to the generator. All that needs to be done is most likely change the 90°elbow that comes off the meter to a tee that allows you to have a gas line to the generator and then it would be the first appliance to receive gas and will not affect the other gas appliances

The issue is the size of the service line coming to the house from the utility company and the meter BTU rating. I had an installer who was convinced I needed an upgraded meter. I called the utility and they assured me that my meter was rated for 50% more than the installer said it was, and could reasonably handle double what the installer says it could. Also, the installer was concerned that if my generator, stove, furnace, and gas dryer were all running at full, I'd be in trouble... But the only thing I have in my house that could get my 13kw generator to even break a sweat is my AC, which obviously wouldn't be running if my biggest gas user my furnace was running. 13kw ran us for 4 days with no problem, even with the AC kicking in. 2500 sqft (plus another 1200 in the basement) house. But all of our major appliances that can be gas are gas. My electric draw almost never goes over 5kw, with some spikes up to 8kw, but often is as low as 500watts.

Some of it yes, but you're probably going to need an least an electrician. The ATS gets installed between your meter and your main service panel. Unless you're comfortable enough to pull your meter and route service lines around, you're going to need an electrician. Assuming you have natural gas, that might be easier to deal with, but I'd still hire a plumber or hvac company to route it. There are codes to follow with the generator on top of the electrical and gas codes, so if you live somewhere that is important, you better do your research. You don't want to install your generator and find out you put it a foot too close to your furnace air intake and have to move it.

I had my generator (13kw) bought and installed through Costco. After the 10% rebate/credit, my total cost was $6500 in the fall of 2020. That included the install pad and the cold weather kit. My install was fairly straight forward. Generator is about 15 feet from the gas and electric meters. They just had to run the lines along the side of the house a little. Took a day, and my power was only out for about an hour while they modified the wiring between my panel and the meter to run through the ATS first, basically turning my main panel into a sub panel now. Which is kinda nice because I can cut the power to my panel from outside and I don't have any live wires in my panel.

How loud is it when running full load?

EDIT: I think it's 67dba which is equivalent to normal conversation.

I paid 2500 to have the 22kw installed. I just went to the generac website and called local authorized dealers. The guy I hired didn't care that I bought it myself, but it is a question to ask. The generator was installed about 15ft from my panel. So it was a fairly simple install. I paid 5k, without the 10yr warranty, I think I paid another 1200 for that.

Expect to pay over 13k for the entire project.
