My family prefers side by side vs french door. My parents can't bend over due to back/knee in order to take things out of the freezer in a French door. Also, it's hard to pull things out of the bottom of the freezer bucket, have to move everything on top first. It's hard to tell what's down there in the books and crannies of the freezer bucket. Side by side, there's many shelves so can stay more organized and can peek all the way to the back most of the time.

For us... The freezer section is more convenient to find things stacked up shelf by shelf.

Bought for $1300 in April 2022. Would recommend as as a no frills reliable fridge. We like side-by-side over French door because you don't have to bend over and hunt for stuff. More room and access for bigger frozen items.

Filter the water before it goes into the fridge with a RO setup.
I tried that but water still has to gonthrough the filter unless I start getting involved with the internals of the machine. Have you figured a way to bypass the internal filter?

Biggest plus for me is pretty widsepread availability & youtube tutorials for fixing the few parts that seem to consistently die in 8-10 years (LED lights - 3 pack for $50, ice maker - $60, etc...).

Bought this model a few months ago. Seems decent. My main complaint is that it seems to be impossible to remove/rearrange fridge shelves, fridge drawers, and freezer drawers unless you completely remove the doors from their hinges. This is my first side-by-side so I'm not sure if this is normal.
Also, the "order filter" light just came on. Was hoping to get more life out of the filters especially since we're just 2 people, not a large family like the fridge's target audience.
Be aware that since it's a large fridge with an icemaker, it doesn't have the greatest energy efficiency either (it's not Energy Star rated).

Descent fridge but this is a $180 price increase from 2 months ago, you're better off waiting until it's really on sale.

My 26 year old GE refrigerator stopped working about 6 weeks ago. The freezer side worked (or so I thought because it was 20 degrees F) but the refrigerator side was warm (60 degrees F) no matter how low I adjusted the temperature. I thought I was going to have to buy a new one.

I cleaned the dust from the condenser coils and saw that the condenser fan wasn't spinning. I bought a replacement condenser fan motor for $150 and installed it. Now the fan worked but after two days I still had the same warm refrigerator issue.

Because the freezer side was cold but not the refrigerator side, I suspected ice build up on the evaporator coils (from the compressor constantly running trying to reach a cold temperature because the defective condenser fan wasn't cooling the condenser coils) not allowing cold air to be blown through them into the refrigerator side.

I removed the panel over the evaporator coils on the freezer side and sure enough they were clogged with ice. I used a hair dryer to melt all the ice and put then the panel back on. I set the temperature controls at mid-range which is the initial setting when new. Now the refrigerator runs at 30 to 32 degrees F and the freezer runs at 0 to -4 degrees F, just like brand new.

So before spending money on a new refrigerator, check to see if it isn't something simple. I know very little about refrigerators and never worked on one before. There are videos on You Tube to help.

Before and after pictures of evaporator coils attached.

Q: why would anyone get a side by side over a French door? Just seems inconvenient.
After having both, I can say for daily use, side by side WINS. Everything is on a shelf were you can find it and get to it easily. No having to bend over the freezer, having to move things out just to see what got buried underneath.
The only advantage of a French door I've ever noticed is being able to refrigerate whole cakes for birthday parties and such. But that is only for those few occasions.

Some dispense water without the filter in place, some need the filter receptacle to be capped with a plug, and others can be bypassed with units that are simply hollowed-out filters--basically the casing with nothing inside. I am researching what will work with the fridge in this thread now, but I suspect the filter can just be removed and water will bypass on its own.

For your fridge, just search the model number and bypass. "Filter 4" units have a plug available, for example.

Icemakers in doors in french door refrigerators have a higher failure rate than side by side. Samsungs suck, I've had 2 french doors and both died. Now with GE side by side. Cost of filter (chipped) is very high.
I have a Samsung french door that is now 10 years old. I have had 0 issues with it the entire time I have owned it. Moved 2 x with it, it lives in my garage as an extra fridge (harder on the components because of the dust and temperature swings) and still works perfectly fine.
I clean the coils regularly about 1 x every 2 years and the temperature control display will show haywire if the power blips for a little while but seems to fix its self after a day or 2 if that happens and that has never affected the actual function of the fridge/freezer.

Granted mine does not have an icemaker/water feature in the door but does have an icemaker in the french door freezer section.

The fridge usually comes with a cap for the filter that lets you bypass. Or they're like $20 on amazon.

I tried but a mod deleted it. Look around for Kenmore 9081 filters. Currently available at Walmart for $18 for a 2-pack.
Thanks!

Need to buy a fridge for a new apartment I'm moving to. It doesn't have connections for water in the fridge. Can that just not be installed or does this fridge require it even if I just didn't use it? Or are there cheaper options?

Above is spot on. I've had both and side by side is way better for daily use. The only drawback lack of a natural space for frozen pizzas and cakes. If you have another fridge or chest freezer then this isn't an issue. Agree with another comment above that ice seems to work better with side by side as it's actually in the freezer section...

We have this fridge, we hate it. Stuff always feeezes up in the fridge and it's been looked at. Tech looked at it when our water dispenser went out at 1 year old and he said nothing is wrong.
