My family prefers side by side vs french door. My parents can't bend over due to back/knee in order to take things out of the freezer in a French door. Also, it's hard to pull things out of the bottom of the freezer bucket, have to move everything on top first. It's hard to tell what's down there in the books and crannies of the freezer bucket. Side by side, there's many shelves so can stay more organized and can peek all the way to the back most of the time.
For us... The freezer section is more convenient to find things stacked up shelf by shelf.
Bought for $1300 in April 2022. Would recommend as as a no frills reliable fridge. We like side-by-side over French door because you don't have to bend over and hunt for stuff. More room and access for bigger frozen items.

My 26 year old GE refrigerator stopped working about 6 weeks ago. The freezer side worked (or so I thought because it was 20 degrees F) but the refrigerator side was warm (60 degrees F) no matter how low I adjusted the temperature. I thought I was going to have to buy a new one.

I cleaned the dust from the condenser coils and saw that the condenser fan wasn't spinning. I bought a replacement condenser fan motor for $150 and installed it. Now the fan worked but after two days I still had the same warm refrigerator issue.

Because the freezer side was cold but not the refrigerator side, I suspected ice build up on the evaporator coils (from the compressor constantly running trying to reach a cold temperature because the defective condenser fan wasn't cooling the condenser coils) not allowing cold air to be blown through them into the refrigerator side.

I removed the panel over the evaporator coils on the freezer side and sure enough they were clogged with ice. I used a hair dryer to melt all the ice and put then the panel back on. I set the temperature controls at mid-range which is the initial setting when new. Now the refrigerator runs at 30 to 32 degrees F and the freezer runs at 0 to -4 degrees F, just like brand new.

So before spending money on a new refrigerator, check to see if it isn't something simple. I know very little about refrigerators and never worked on one before. There are videos on You Tube to help.

Before and after pictures of evaporator coils attached.
Don't forget to check that the drain isn't partly clogged to prevent it from happening again

Q: why would anyone get a side by side over a French door? Just seems inconvenient.

Because then you're ice bin is stored in a freezer whereas with many French doors, it is effectively stored in the fridge. This means your ice goes through more freeze/thaw cycles, is more prone to freezer burn taste, and I'm under the impression these ice makers in the fridge are more prone to failure in general.

Open to contesting opinions, this is just stuff I've read about. I do have a French door setup though, mainly because it was a good deal and we needed a fridge at the time.

Excellent point and I checked that as it was defrosting. Seemed not to drain. Unfortunately the drain pipe has a number of turns so I wasn't able to get a fish tape all the way through but when I got it partially through the water started to come out.

I bought this exact fridge from Costco and it was delivered by the "generic truck" that you described. The delivery was done without issue and they picked up the old fridge and hauled it away too. However the joke was on me, because after they left I started to put stuff in the fridge and noticed some muddy footprints on the bottom interior of the refrigerator. Really guys??? I have never had that happen in years and years of deliveries. A brand new fridge with muddy prints on the inside. So of course I returned it!

Just kidding, I kept it because it was pretty easy to clean. But frustrating all the same. The delivery guys also "forgot" to remove some plastic and styrofoam from the freezer (I would have reminded them when I was watching them deliver/install/set up the fridge, but I didn't notice either). Whirlpool had some foam somewhat hidden in the freezer and it was not immediately obvious. But I would expect the delivery crew to thoroughly review/inspect before leaving. Oh well.

Would I use Costco for delivery again? Yup. The cost is tough to beat. Home Depot, Lowe's etc. usually charge a delivery fee and when I was ordering/comparing 5 months ago, one of them (can't remember which) charged an additional haul away fee for an old fridge.
Costco and Sam's Club are pretty much the only big box chains that offers free haul-away. I recently ordered an LG fridge from Sam's Club (same benefits as far as 2 year warranty, free delivery and haul away as Costco), and the order was handled directly by LG using their own delivery team. And they were far better than the last time I had a Costco fridge delivery by an independent delivery company. The Korean guys from the LG team were super careful when removing and reinstalling the fridge doors, padding the fridge bringing it into the kitchen, and taking the time to level it on both front and back legs. They told me Sam's orders are handled by LG directly while Costco orders get 3rd party delivery. The nameless company that did my Costco delivery just wanted to get in and out as fast as possible...forget about leveling or making sure the doors were properly aligned afterwards.

And thanks for the tip on avoiding Whirlpool and Samsung! Didn't want Whirlpool after my 8 year old Whirlpool's compressor died and they seem to be using old/noisy compressor tech still. Originally had a Samsung on order and cancelled it for an LG after seeing that LG ditched their problematic linear compressor for tried and true inverter compressor.
