I cleaned the dust from the condenser coils and saw that the condenser fan wasn't spinning. I bought a replacement condenser fan motor for $150 and installed it. Now the fan worked but after two days I still had the same warm refrigerator issue.
Because the freezer side was cold but not the refrigerator side, I suspected ice build up on the evaporator coils (from the compressor constantly running trying to reach a cold temperature because the defective condenser fan wasn't cooling the condenser coils) not allowing cold air to be blown through them into the refrigerator side.
I removed the panel over the evaporator coils on the freezer side and sure enough they were clogged with ice. I used a hair dryer to melt all the ice and put then the panel back on. I set the temperature controls at mid-range which is the initial setting when new. Now the refrigerator runs at 30 to 32 degrees F and the freezer runs at 0 to -4 degrees F, just like brand new.
So before spending money on a new refrigerator, check to see if it isn't something simple. I know very little about refrigerators and never worked on one before. There are videos on You Tube to help.
Before and after pictures of evaporator coils attached.
Because then you're ice bin is stored in a freezer whereas with many French doors, it is effectively stored in the fridge. This means your ice goes through more freeze/thaw cycles, is more prone to freezer burn taste, and I'm under the impression these ice makers in the fridge are more prone to failure in general.
Open to contesting opinions, this is just stuff I've read about. I do have a French door setup though, mainly because it was a good deal and we needed a fridge at the time.
Just kidding, I kept it because it was pretty easy to clean. But frustrating all the same. The delivery guys also "forgot" to remove some plastic and styrofoam from the freezer (I would have reminded them when I was watching them deliver/install/set up the fridge, but I didn't notice either). Whirlpool had some foam somewhat hidden in the freezer and it was not immediately obvious. But I would expect the delivery crew to thoroughly review/inspect before leaving. Oh well.
Would I use Costco for delivery again? Yup. The cost is tough to beat. Home Depot, Lowe's etc. usually charge a delivery fee and when I was ordering/comparing 5 months ago, one of them (can't remember which) charged an additional haul away fee for an old fridge.
And thanks for the tip on avoiding Whirlpool and Samsung! Didn't want Whirlpool after my 8 year old Whirlpool's compressor died and they seem to be using old/noisy compressor tech still. Originally had a Samsung on order and cancelled it for an LG after seeing that LG ditched their problematic linear compressor for tried and true inverter compressor.
