kinda. you open the headlamp in a V and just plug it in. no removal of battery but its not just plug it in. usbc on the outside would compromise the waterproofness

Do you have to remove the battery pack and plug the cable into that or does the charging cable go directly into the headlamp?

Battery pack is accessed by opening the sealed back cover. It's like a 9V battery but has a charge port on the outside surface. It can be removed to charge making it easier to use the short C cable provided. MUCH better than AA batteries all over the place. USB ports are everywhere these days, and C cables are also. I bought 2 and have a backup or one for a helper. Great lights.

How's the battery life? I bought one of those strip led headband lights on Amazon. It's ok, but the battery doesn't seem to last more than a few hours.

I bought one for each vehicle and one as a gift for family. The batteries are not part of the lifetime warranty obviously.

It feels solid and is very bright but is driven by the type of circuit that will slowly get dimmer as the battery dies. I usually get an hour out of my batteries. There are many other headlamps that use this kind of battery so you can buy replacements, and it's very nice you can use AAAs as an instant backup solution while the main battery is charging.

I've had it 2 years or so. I left the battery on my dash accidentally in the sun for a week and it swelled a tiny amount but still fits and lasts an hour. I have ran this continuously hooked up to a battery bank with the back open but don't remember if it was full brightness.

If you want a headlamp that lasts longer (4-22 hours) look into a 26650 powered light but this one is great.

They also have this headlamp, buy 2 get $21 off. Comes out to $29… there's also other lights you can add if you don't want 2 headlamps.

I find that the weakest part of these cheap headlamps is the elastic strap which stretches out very quickly and becomes useless. Any recs on relatively inexpensive but good replacement?

Wearing a swollen battery against your forehead is a very bad idea. For your safety, I would strongly advise you to throw it away.
