I think
If you pick the trade in they reduce any discounts from programs to final value after trade in gets counted instead of initial retail so that's why final price increases overall but Samsung website is glitching half of the time and mess (one would think with their budget they would have figured it out by now) although thanks to that sometimes people get good deals due to those errors.
I see website showing S23 Ultra "starting at $449", so basically it's $1379-$180("free" upgrade discount for 512GB)=$1199-$750 trade in gives final price which gets discounted slightly more depending on discount program so that's why it's $400+.

This year it was like 70 bucks out of pocket for straight upgrade fome flip 4 to 5 using the preorder promos.
That's what I mean. They hold onto you with these excellent trade in deals. It's refreshing as no other phone manufacturer does it, but I still can't imagine paying retail for either the Fold or Flip and seeing what they've done (not much) from generation to generation one can't think they're recouping a lot of the cost they lost on the early models. I went from a Flip 3 to Flip 5 and the bigger screen is nice and battery but no way worth a $1k. To be fair I felt the same way going from an iPhone 11 Pro to an iPhone 14 Pro Max. There's really zero reason to upgrade modern phones yearly unless a good trade in.

I love my Z Fold 3 especially approaching 50, bigger screen is essential but a Note size is too big to carry in pocket (I have them for work, so I know). Originally I bought it to try something new and collected for novelty, but turned out it's the most useful among all I have (just name a few, N93 transformer, featured in Transformer movie, with 3x optical zoom, N95 dual slider, Mi 3 back slider front lens...)
I also recommend my wife to get Flip since she likes small phone (using Galaxy 10e and she doesn't want any bigger)
Will look into this to upgrade to Fold 5

I had fold 4 for about 6 months and loved it. One morning, I unfolded the phone and found the inner screen was torn in the middle from top to bottom. Did not drop the phone nor there was anything in the middle that would damage the screen upon folding. Samsung denied saying it's physical damage and there goes $1800 in drain. Upon searching on the net I found many people had this issue. Inner screen can't be fixed, you have to replace the phone.

I have the Fold3 for 2 yrs now. The protective cover (started to peel off) on the foldable screen has been replaced twice by Samsung for no cost. Screen size is absolutely gorgeous if you watch lot of videos, email and browsing on your phone. Camera is not as great as Galaxy Ultra series.
Had my Fold 4 for a year so far and love it over my past iPhones.

The inner screen protector started to bubble and separate at the 10-month mark. Samsung offered to replace it free of charge at a local phone fix-it shop by I didn't really want someone else touching my Fold so I ordered a pack of screen protectors and did it myself.

I was initially tempted to upgrade to the Fold 5 but there just isn't much new over the Fold 4 so I'm holding onto mine. Curious what the Fold 6 will offer.

Upgraded from fold 4 to fold 5
Absolutely worth it .. $575

They don't advertise well like Apple
But noticeably lighter, hinge smaller and experience overall better from holding and carrying wise

Recommend the upgrade if you have money to burn

I've only had mine for 8 months now. Still love it. No issues. Looks as good as it did on day 1. Can't imagine going back to a regular phone.

I've had a flip 5 for f however long they've existed and I am now hearing a sound reminiscent to the sound my flip 3 would make when the screen protector was coming up. Sounds like shhhhhpop. I don't see a bubble yet but this is extremely fast.
