Available:About this board game:
  • Carcassonne is a tile-placement game in which the players draw and place a tile with a piece of southern French landscape on it. The tile might feature a city, a road, a cloister, grassland or some combination thereof, and it must be placed adjacent to tiles that have already been played, in such a way that cities are connected to cities, roads to roads, etcetera. Having placed a tile, the player can then decide to place one of their meeples on one of the areas on it: on the city as a knight, on the road as a robber, on a cloister as a monk, or on the grass as a farmer. When that area is complete, that meeple scores points for its owner.

You can start off with the 20th anniversary for $36 or the basic base game for around 20 at Target. If you don't like buying expansions for the board games then the 20th anniversary is a better buy as it comes with a small expansion to increase replayability and the art style is
subjectively better. But, none of the art style from the expansions matches the 20th anniversary base game. The best expansions are "Inns and Cathedrals" and "Traders and Builders"

Maybe someone who has played them will chime in, but it looks like they are well-reviewed on Amazon. The Princess & The Dragonhas 4.8 stars out of 5, with over 470 reviews.

The Carcassonne 20th anniversary base game. It's very fun and quite portable if you take the tiles out of the box.

I wish they'd just discount the Big Box that has like 10 expansions.

Inns and Cathedrals as well as Traders and Builders add quite a bit of additional strategy without being overwhelming.

While hemming and hawing about spending $13.49 on the Inns & Cathedrals expansion, the price dropped to $11.36. Amazon wins again.

Wow, the "art" on the 20th anniversary version looks awful. It really looks straight out of a bargain bin kids' book.

The base game is a good starting point, you don't really need any expansions. For a new player buying an expansion along with the base game, Inns and Cathedrals is probably the best bet. Simple and straightforward additions, plus you get the pink player color that other expansions include support for.

Once you have a better idea of how you and your playing group approach the game, that's when you know which expansions are better. Expansion feature combinations that work for a more casual group won't work as well for a group looking for more strategy and competition.

Personally, I like things that enhance road features, and I prefer to keep the meeple/figure supply more limited.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the base game. I find the scoring unbalanced. Cities offer the possibility of great reward (2-4 points per tile), while involving little risk (even incomplete ones score 1-2 points per tile). Other features only score 1 point per tile, regardless of completion. Some of the expansions help balance things out. I forget exactly which ones because we moved on to the Big Box, which has a bunch.

Thanks for the recommendation. Also, that expansion dropped in price to $10.70. We love the base game, so I'm willing to take a shot on this expansion.
