I finally decided to get a dashcam. Is this a good one to go with or should I be looking for a model with a rear-facing camera as well? The screen isn't super important to me
I have this or something like it from Costco, looks the same. It's OK. It works but the mount is terrible. It's been a year or so and it no longer holds for more than a few days and will fall randomly. Need a more permanent mount.

Seems silly but do you wet the suction cup a little around the edges before you mount it? Also make sure it isn't stuck over the little black dots on the windshield.

Try a dab of e9000 glue if mounting on windshield (don't use glue on dash!)

I bought a rear mirror adapter to hang the dashcam up since the suction cup is trash

So I've had dashcams in my 3 cars for at least 10 years now. I've gone through a bunch, and here's what I've learned.(If you don't feel like reading, I would NOT buy this dashcam for a number of reasons)
All dashcams need something that gives them power for a few seconds after the car is cut off. This allows them to write that last bit of video to the memory card. The first cam I had used a battery, and that thing died, in all 3 cars after 6 months. The battery did not like the heat. All my cams since then have a capacitor(a lot of cams call it a super capacitor). The only downside to this is that you can't take it out of the car and use it to record something. That will not matter to 99.9% of people. Go with the capacitor. This dashcam doesn't even state if it has a batter or a capacitor as far as I can see. I would stay away for that reason alone.
This cam says that it only works down to 14 degrees. I live in GA, and we probably only get a few days like that a year. Anyone up north should stay away. The cams I see on Amazon right now say they go to like -20. This is one reason I think that they might be using a battery in there. It will not last.
Another thing is that the angle isn't great. It's 139. A lot of cams now can do 170 degrees. I would probably opt for something with a higher field of view.
After that, I went through a few dashcams. What I've decided to go with now is a a cam that records the front view and the back view. All my cars have this now.
And on a side note, when you get an SD card, get an application class card. They can handle a lot more reads and writes, which a cam would be doing constantly.
And at this point, I'm assuming you want a suggestion on which dashcam to get. And My answer is that, I don't know what I would buy if I had to buy another one. I just know that I wouldn't buy the exact models I have now, because there are better cams on the market since I bought mine. I just wanted to state my opinion on this particular cam, which is a solid NO. Just go on Amazon, and read reviews, and look for the features I mentioned.

Try a dab of Vaseline on the suction cup. Has worked for me

What would be an adequate viewing angle for that price?

140 or more is fine. If it's true 139 deg it should work.

I had another Type S one from Costco. It died after a few months. I'm glad I got it from Costco.
I think the Viofo line of cams available on Amazon offer a good mix of features, price, and quality.
