We cut the veggie it at the base leaving the sponge, roots and basket in tact. We line it up on a baking tray and let it dry outside under the sun for a week. We pull out the sponge and most of roots essentially just crumble apart. Then we just use our fingers to brush off the rest. After it is clean, we put them in ziplock bags and store then until we need them. Make sure they are 100% dry before storing.
When we want to start a new planting, we take them out of storage to prepare. We then bring a pot of water up to a boil and turn it off. We then drop the sponges in hot water and let it soak for a few minutes. The grow baskets we just drop them in a bowl with soapy water and give it some agitation and just rinse it off. Not sure if these steps are necessary but just want to kill any possible bacteria. Then we take them out, let them cool. Then we just put it together with a seed inside and we insert it into the aerogarden.
Been doing this with the original grow basket and sponges we received "free" with the aerogarden purchase for 5 cycles of bok choy and mustard greens and are still holding strong.
