Was just there 2 days ago. It is about 1hr15min to 1hr 30min to Yosemite valley (the tourist area). About 30min to the Yosemite South entrance but keep in mind that there is another curvy 1hr drive to Yosemite valley from the entrance. At around 8AM weekday, there was almost no wait at the entrance for admission. at 10 AM weekday, it was about 20min at admission gate. Do add that to travel time. The drive itself is very scenic but the question is whether you wanna do it on the way back after hours of hiking. Reservation date range being winter is another thing to consider.

lol 20 miles from south entrances means probably at least one hour drive each way to the valley way without traffic - that is not a place I would ever even consider staying at if I was going to Yosemite. By itself, it looks like a nice area but advertising it for Yosemite is just meh.

Family has a cabin near here. Good place to visit if you want to just be by the lake and the woods. It's a very small place. Avoid on holidays in the spring/summer though, as the lake gets busy and a lot of people drive up from Fresno & Madera (Especially avoid July 4th). Ducey's has good food but is expensive. Local pines market is way overpriced and if you plan to stay like a week or two you'll be driving to Oakhurst to get groceries.

There is a reason prices are so low from Nov to March. Both Tioga road and the road to Glacier Point will be closed. So the activity and scenery within the park will be limited to just what is within the valley.

Ive stayed here twice before. Its almost the same as staying in Oakhurst which is where many people stay for the park (unless you shell out the $$$ to stay in the park). Anyway, the hotel is a bit dated but we had a large room last time with a slightly separate living area and fireplace so appreciated the space. The restaurants here are good (loved the mexican place). And the lake is right there. Just know its rustic and a bit dated.

I once booked a place which was at the "gateway to yosemite". It was a 1+ hour drive each way to the valley. I never lived that down 😅

Wasn't is snowyAF Jan-March of 2023? So strong risk of not even making it into the valley? Factor in the 1.5 hr drive ev1 else is saying? I think I'd stay away from this one.

Nice Lake, but it's still 1hr+ from Yosemite's southern gate.

My dad's family has camped here (Bass Lake) every year since like 1941 and it's great for swimming in the summer because it's unusually warm (not a deep reservoir). Since you can't swim November-March, it's not so great.

Where do you have to live to be the closest to the park? I was about an hour away last time and it was hell after hiking. Besides calling what would be the best areas to stay

Sorry, I was vague. My family camps at Bass Lake, where The Pines is ACTUALLY located.

Every time I'm been to Yosemite, it's been a day trip from camping at Bass Lake.

You forgot to mention ice cream at The Forks or Miller's Landing for the kiddies.

Would much rather stay in the park...here are a few better options if you have a couple extra dollars and can find an opening

Lodging - Yosemite National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

Like to stay at Yosemite Valley Lodge. It would be overpriced if not for the location. Then shuttle or hoof it over to Awahnee for a nice lunch and some ranger tour if available. Too pricey to stay at Awahnee, but it's beautiful.
