I wouldn't call it a poor man's anything. The other brands have you paying for a name. It's a ceramic kamado. My first vision B Series lasted from 2015-2022 until an unfortunate fall. I picked it up at Sam's club on clearance for $300 back in 2015 and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Countless meals and good times on that thing. I just found a guy selling the white higher end vision on Marketplace. It and the heating element insert, stainless cap, and the control knobs on the front for air flow. I paid the guy $300 and he also had the cover and lava stone. I hope this one lasts forever. I thought about getting a Kamado Joe simply for the assisted lift lid and woven stainless gasket, but it's not even close to being with it for 4x as much. I never got the big green egg thing. They're obnoxiously overpriced and they make you spend a fortune for every little cooking accessory.
I've had mine for over 5 years now. This is a poor man's Kamado Joe or Big Green Egg. I'm very happy with mine, but do intend to eventually get a larger version since this will only handle one larger cut of meat (brisket or Boston butt) at a time. If you are looking to smoke meat then you'll need a heat deflector as a separate purchase. The only downside I've experienced is the casters are warping from rolling it around on decking. Everything else has held up wonderfully, even through two cross-country moves.
Having owned a big green egg for 4 years, and then moving and selling it with my house, I do miss the setup I had but I kept all my BGE accessories. I stumbled upon this deal last year and it has been an amazing purchase. I didn't feel like spending 1500 on a smoker again and so I got this. I did switch out the top vent because I liked the one with a sliding opening, but outside of that $30 mod, this performs just as great. It got delivered to my house, and I assembled it in 45 min approx.

For bbq, keeps temp stable just as good as green egg.

In-laws have one of these. Left it outside in for years in the northeast. Replaced the gaskets and the thing was as good as new and works great. Have done brisket for hours at 225 or pizza at 800. This is a good ceramic kamado if you don't want to pay $$$ for BGE or KJ

I've had a Vision kamado for about a decade now and love it! I got it off a crazy slickdeal at Sam's Club back in 2013, I believe. I replace the gasket about once a year, but everything else has held up perfect. I am amazed at it's ability to hold a steady temp, so long as you have a good gasket to keep the heat in. I've primarily used it for smoking low and slow with the heat shield, but it's also great for high temp searing.

Is the $1500 on some other smoker or Green Egg cost significant more? Arent they the same thing?

I have experience with acorn, vision grill, green egg, and kamado. My favorite was the vision actually. The acorn was better in some aspects but rusted quickly in Georgia. Long story short, don't discount vision grills as "cheap green eggs", they work equally well.

BGE and KJ offer lifetime warranty on the ceramics. They also have a more developed ecosystem of accessories. I wouldn't be surprised of the ceramic works better on BGE or KJ but I don't know if it's the same or not.

Is there a difference between a lifetime BGE or KJ or 3 of these Vision kamados? Maybe not for a lot of people.

I do have a M BGE and find my kettles are more fun to cook on. Hard to beat the value from used kettles if you don't mind fiddling with vents a bit.

Shipping alone worth over 100 dollars to get it to your door. Keep in mind that these grills are not meant to be moved. So once you set it, you forget it.
This unit is a little smaller. Good for small families. At this price point, it's a good price point to get into kamado grills. All you need is some atv gasket maker and some felt and it will hold temps in the north east winters.

The accessories that vision sells directly seems pretty limited compares to what KJ & BGE offer. I think the dojoe (https://www.kamadojoe.com/products/dojoe) seems good for pizza since getting the pizza in and out doesn't require a change in elevation and allows for the lavastone heat deflector to fit under it to prevent burnt crusts. I was also looking into whatever this ring thing is for (https://www.kamadojoe.com/products/kamado-joe-accessory-rack [kamadojoe.com]) because it looks perfect for supporting a wok but I have no idea if any of it fits.
