I was thinking the same. IIRC, Purex was only slightly better than plain water in their testing.

That said, I often buy these lower end detergents (eg Arm and Hammer) to use with towels, which don't require much since they are mostly clean to begin with.
Arm & Hammer (with Oxi, esp) performed okay. I completely agree with you (and even use A&H), btw -- if your clothes aren't that dirty, then even marginal laundry detergent should be fine.

Good price, but Purex performed poorly in Consumer Reports tests.
Which in the report came in at top to mid range?

I no longer have the CR online sub (it's not cheap), but Persil and Tide Ultra and Tide Oxi and Tide HD scored at the top. Kirkland Ultra sold at Costco (and believed to be made by Henkels, who makes Persil) was given a high rating and an overall Best Buy. They were all top performers.

With bargain detergents one tends to use 20% more to balance out the weak quality.. especially in laundromat machines.

I hear your argument but to be fair, my Samsung front loader has a max detergent level and I always fill it to the max. So, whether Persil or A&H, I use about the same quantity. The reality is, tho - that most of my clothes aren't that dirty and not stained, so even the cheap A&H is often good enough.

No, I hear ya - my point is that I (personally) use pretty much the same amount all the time. I have the good stuff - Persil and Tide, but if I'm washing my bike clothes after wearing for just 2 hours or my gym clothes after a few hours of wear, then simple cheap A&H Clean Burst smells good and cleans well enough for day-to-day washes. Like I said, I have Persil, but don't use it every day.
