The Polk Lsi M were multi-thousand dollar systems when first released.
Unfortunantely(or fortunately for the people who need to get paid making them and shipping them) real wood veneer and heavy speakers with heavy duty construction are very expensive to produce and ship around.
Nice thing as since these are perfectly squared edges, you could easily take them apart, strip the plastic veneer and apply any veneer you like yourself with relative ease. You could even get a a sheet of some nice $300(for 1 small sheet) exotic wood or burl.
In any case a long weekend(or less if you are expereinced) and you can have whatever finish you find acceptable for $25-500 in supplies depending on the products chosen and provided you already have tools.
You could also try a rattle can in a choice color.
FWIIW and IMHO, with a little PEQ these are fantastic speakers. Far cleaner in the mids vs the XT20 and the small towers I also tried. The little woofer they have in there is just excellent for this price. Quit frankly if you have the time to dial them in based on both the Klipple measurements, your tastes and major room effects they are outstanding speakers. Spinorama is good place to get some starting ideas for the PEQ settings.(I used my own settings though)
I do have expensive well reguared speakers as a reference so I feel comfortable saying these are pretty great for low $$.
I also recommend a high pass to subwoofer in any living room set-up unless you just never go loud. Take the bass out of them around 85-125hrz depedning on the set-up and skill involved. You could also plug the port if you are high passing these as that will block any pipe resonaces you obviously don't need bass support from the port if high passing to subs or just using subs in general even without a high pass.
