How much core strength do you need to operate this?
I have one of these. I think it's the KitchenAid version. I could imagine a frail elderly person or perhaps a small child having trouble with this, but neither my wife nor I have any trouble operating this thing. It is fairly bulky and it does take up space in the drawer. I like mine, but I understand the minimalist approach to kitchen gadgets.

My only complaint is that it's not quite large enough for big apples. When I make applesauce, I often start with very large apples and some don't fit in this thing.

Read this on Amazon:
This is not recommended for anyone without enough upper body strength. It takes a lot of effort to push it down on a decent size apple. Most times it will only go through barely halfway before you want to give up and grab a knife to pry open the apple pieces instead (because once it's in and get stuck, it'll be hard to pull it back out of the apple). It seems dangerous to use because the blades are not sharp enough to cut through the apple, yet if you persist you may end up hurting yourself (possibly cutting off your own fingers). I would steer clear of this useless junk.

I've also read that its pretty big so it will take up a lot of room in your kitchen drawer. Think I'll pass on this even though I love eating apple slices with PB.

i imagine the cheap ones would suck, but if this is quality (OXO or KitchenAid) should be relatively good.

What's the diameter of the circular blade area?

I bought this at Walmart a few weeks ago. Works really great on big Granny Smiths! I shave the whole apple skin off first and then run I it through the slicer.

Thanks - in the past I fell for things that look great on instagram but when i get it at home i can't replicate the results. Doesn't have to be perfect but glad to read your feedback.

I would say, spend a few bucks more and buy this instead -

https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-G...204&sr=8-3

It is fun to eat round slices of apples, and my kid loves it. Apple consumption has doubled in our house in the last two weeks due to this tool.
