I grew up on this game. My family loved it. As an adult, I realized we were playing with custom rules not part of the original game. I think our rules make it WAY better.

House Rules:
Rather than just putting tiles in rows (of runs or sets) on the table, you can build a Scrabble-style grid of tiles. For instance, a red 1 can be part of a red 1-2-3 run intersecting with a set of three 1s (red, yellow, blue). Tiles can intersect or stand on their own.
Once played, all the tiles are in a common space. Anyone can rearrange the tiles any way they want, in order to use more tiles from their hand. Anything goes, as long as at the end of their turn, the table is valid (all tiles are part of a run or set of at least three).

Without these rules, it's basically just a card game, not fully taking advantage of the tile format.

Fun game that you can teach to new players in just a few minutes. Enough thinking/strategizing to be engaging, but not enough to disrupt the flow of conversation.

Do check your tiles, though, some reviews mention missing/duplicate tiles. Happened to us on a set we ordered during COVID, but has not been an issue on a couple of sets we've ordered for gifts within the last year or so.

This is a really wild twist on the game that I imagine speeds it up.
My wife introduced me to this game, she was pretty good at it and still wins roughly half the time. It is a game of luck and skill in identifying and taking advantage of opportunities.

I thought your second house rule was just a standard rule?

It is.

From the rules:
Players try to table the greatest amount
of tiles by rearranging or adding to sets which are already on the table. Sets can be manipulated in many
ways (examples follow) as long as at the end of each round only legitimate sets remain and no loose tiles
are left over.

Ahh, ok. I wasn't sure what all the original game included. With my first rule, however, it really opens up a lot more opportunities/creativity for the second rule.

The "official" rules have evolved over the years too. We have a set from the 80s and it requires the joker be treated differently than the newer rules.

Not sure if this was ever an official rule, but we play that when a joker is used in a run or set, that meld is "locked" and can only be added to, not broken apart, until the joker is replaced.

I've seen this rule. You can only take a joker if you replace it with a tile from your board. You must also use the joker that same turn with at least two pieces from your board.

We love this game. Got it a few years ago. The hardest part (sometimes) is getting that first meld of 30!
