How long does it take to rip full 25gb-50gb and then strip away unwanted audio using MakeMKV? I use to do this all the time back in the day before BD. I was the master of ripping dvd's lol either dvdfab full copy or anydvd/clonedvd.
If you take 'backup' of a BD, it usually takes 30-50mins on my pc.

I guess I'm clueless, but what do you mean by "after flashing?" I have an old external blu ray drive for my iMac and am looking to upgrade it to a 4K drive at some point, but I thought a drive could only rip 4K movies if the product specifically states it can.
4K drives are hard to get by. On contrary, regularly available drives can be flashed with old firmware and/or upgrade to different firmware to unlock this feature. There's a forum thread on MakeMKV to explain how it works and also the required info for flashing.

Hmm, I wonder if my drive can be flashed to do this, I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

You actually have to downgrade the firmware on this drive AND cross-flash it from a BP50NB40 to a BP60NB10 to get it to read 4K discs.

A nice benefit is you effectively end up "upgrading" the drive to one of these:

No irony. They'll sell disc players (hardware) but not discs (software).

Coincidentally, I actually just dusted off my old wp50nb40 earlier this week and cross flashed it to bp60nb10 using a the gui tool on the Makemkv forum. Took like 5 mins total. "It can't be this easy" I thought as I watched it disconnect and then remount as a bp60nb10. Exact same hardware, but now 4k compatible. Such a scam how the more expensive one is purely a firmware difference.

I do not have any disk for now! who need this?
People that need this DO HAVE DISK and want to rip the content to a computer so they can stream it at home and other locations without carrying the DISK around.

this is 2023, not 1995, nobody uses scsi these days.

don't threadcrap with false claims.
the whole thread is inane but whatever. Ppl talking about SCSI, CD-RW DVD's feels like time traveling.. That said I still hate Metallica for coming down hard on Napster . Haven't bought an audio tape for my Walkmen since then.
If anything this thread shows how diverse SD demographics is. Half the users have no idea what some of the devices listed here are.

For anyone that wants to use this to playback blurays(not rip) on pc, you're gonna have a bad time with bluray drm.

What's the difference between ripping and pirating or are they the same thing just using the name ripping to covertly be saying that it is really being illegally copyed
Ripping = making copies for own use
Pirating = making copies for resale
There is no law to prevent ripping whatever you owned or rent. As long you don't resale / distribute it, it is NOT illegal.
